I am changing my blog format. Below are some of the posts from my old blog.

Europe Ignites Flames

Just when you thought Islamic extremist number one targets would be Israel and the United States forever, European countries with there repeated printing of a blasphemous Muhammad cartoon have taken the lead in the hated infidel charts.

Bad Play Still Wins The Day

That was one of the worst played Super Bowls in a while; the biggest F has to go to the Seattle receivers with Jeremy Stevens winning the prize of playing hot potato with the football. Even the ball he caught he juggled. In addition the officials had a lot of questionable calls. Big Ben will have a Super Bowl win on his resume, but he was far from stellar. I will eat crow when it comes to Bill Cowher. He out coached Mike Holgram (the Seahawks time management was horrible)  and Cowher did call the trick play at the right time to seal the deal.

Tom Reilly is a Dumbass

Deval Patrick got all of Watertown delegates today in the Watertown Caucus for governor. Tom Reilly whose “hometown” is Watertown fucked up major earlier in the week when he picked Marie St. Fleur as his lieutenant governor.  St. Fleur has not shown to be competent enough to run her own life let alone a state. It speaks volumes that Reilly and his people did not do enough research and critical thinking when picking St. Fleur. For this and other reason I have decided that Deval Patrick is the best candidate for governor.

My Space Scandal

Earlier in the year on sportspoliticandrevenge.com I predicted that there would be scandals involving myspace particularly about underage girls. Going around the wires yesterday was a story of underage girls assaulted by men they met on myspace. I predict congressional hearings about myspace and other sites by this time next year.

Oscar Nominees

I am rooting for Crash and ducked face cutie Michelle Williams to win. While Brokeback Mountain is the favorite for best picture, I look for Ang Lee to win the director honor and Munich to take the best picture prize.

Charlie Card Confusion

In the old days, before the Charlie Card, monthly T pass holders would get a new card every month with a pretty and different color. Now with the Charlie Card, the new monthly T passes do not change there appearance each month aside from small writing on the back that indicates the month. This is going to cause confusion around the change of each month because people might have 2 cards in there wallet. There is chance of swiping the wrong card or even worse of throwing away the wrong card if one does not look carefully.

Katrina?

Did anyone else think it was odd that the State of the Union did not talk about New Orleans and Katrina?

Common Annoyance

I was waiting for an Amtrak train for that was over an hour late this weekend and an interesting thing happened. The longer the train was delayed the more the people waiting for the train began to talk to each other. Initially they talked about the lateness of the train and made jokes about that, but after they began to have conversations. I call this the snow storm effect. When something like a snow storm or in this case a late train occurs that everyone must deal with it brings people together.

In Harms Way

People like to criticize the media, but many reports do put themselves in harms way in order to get a story. Get well wishes to reporter Bob Woodruff and his cameraman Doug Vogt who were injured by a road side bomb in Iraq.

Coco, The Candy Man, and Wally

It was great news to hear when I came home that the CoCo Crisp deal became official.. This was a great trade for two reasons; Crisp is a younger and cheaper version of Johnny Damon. In addition, the redsox did not give up any of there top pitching projects in the deal.

As for the Celtics trade it was a wash in terms of talent. Wally is a slightly better scorer then Davis and neither is a top notch defender. Davis’s highlight plays will be missed for there entertainment value. Getting rid of Blount was a good thing and the Candy Man will leave at the end of the year giving the two beasts Perkins and Jefferson who are the future of the franchise all the playing time in the middle.

Watertown Democratic Plan and debate about ideas for 06.

The Watertown Democratic Town Committee meeting opened with some confusion last night; Chair Paul Denning, began by asking for volunteers for the February 4 Caucus. While he got volunteers, many in attendance wanted to know if  volunteers at the Caucus could also run to be a delegate and the issue was not never given a definitive answer by chair Denning. What was definitive is that those who arrive to the Caucus after 10:15 will not be allowed to run to be a delegate.

Later, candidate for Secretary of State John Bonifaz gave a speech. Bonifaz highlighted many of his achievement: founding of the National Voting Rights Institute, Leading the fight for a recount in Ohio during the last presidential election, and working for Public Financing of campaigns. Bonifaz stated he is against needing to present an ID in order to vote.  In addition, He passed out fliers describing his proposed Voters Bill of Rights. Bonifaz admitted he has an uphill battle against Secretary of State Galvin. Furthermore, Chair Paul Denning admitted that he had no idea who Bonifaz was until last week.

As the meeting drew to a close, people discussed the need to get more Democratic Town Committee Members to attend meetings, the need to get greater voter turn out, and ideas to register younger voters.

Holy Shit

Hamas won a large majority in the Palestinian election. This, combined with the state of flux the Israel Government is in and Iran nuclear ambitions equals adds up to a lot of bad signs for any peace.

Why can’t we be friends?

Larry and Theo appeared on WEEI this morning and gave slightly more specific reasons for the rift.  They identified differences about the philosophy and direction of the team as the reason for the divide. They both praised Ben and Jed as being selfless during the process. Theo admits that Edger Renteria was not a smart signing.

Fucking stores dont have Jenny Lewis CD

I went to Strawberries on my lunch break; no jenny lewis CD and the clerk had no idea what I was talking about. After work, I went to Newbury Comics; The CD is sold out. Go to VirgenMega Store, they do not have it and again a clerk does not know what I am talking about. Maybe if they had CD people wanted they would actually sell a few CD, instead of the constant decline in CD sales that has occurred the past few years. Maybe it is my fault for wanting to actually own a whole album with the booklet and everything instead of just downloading

RIP

Two more West Virginian miners lost their lives in a mining accident today. I fear that politicians and others will make this an issue for only a few days; they will  talk about mining safety measures, then as the topic fades out of the public consciousness, little will actually be done.

RRRRRedsox

It took me a while to pinpoint it, but this Theo Epstein saga is reminding me of something; while others have made allusions to Star Wars and literary references to give comparisons to the red sox off-season saga, there is one recent pop culture situations that mirrors it nearly perfectly. The Game vs. 50cent Beef. The Game is Theo the protégé who rebels against his extremely successful mentor who signed him. No one was quite sure what started the Game and 50 beef, just the same way no one is completely sure what started the Larry vs. Theo power struggle. After exchanging disses, some overt, but mostly subtle at one another 50 and Game held a press conference to announce the beef is squashed. All the while a captivated hip hop nation makes The Game and 50’s albums 2 of the best selling albums of the year. Even during the Pats season, Boston has been captivated by the Theo and Larry drama and it appears that their make up press conference will take place next week. One wonders if the cease fire between Theo and Larry will be as Tenuous as Game vs. 50 truce.

Lame Duck Doesn’t Quack About Successor

Mitt Romney said a lot about what he would like to accomplish as governor. However, both he and his audience know that Romney is a lame duck with one year left who has his eyes looking toward D.C. What was interesting about Last night's speech is that  Romney only made one reference to lieutenant governor Heally. Heally, by most accounts will seek the governorship and it will be interesting to see how much Romney stumps for her.

Roberts Goes with Christian Right

Judge Roberts  showed some of his true colors yesterday by  siding with the dissent of Scalia and Thomas on the Oregon assisted suicide case. The dissenters went with the religious right on this one and not old conservative ideology such as states rights and individual rights.

Pats Beat Themselves ( with refs help)

Bull Shit interference call changed the tone of the game. After that, percentages caught up with the Pats; eventually everyone makes mistakes, and the guys who usually don’t make them Brown, Brady, and Vinateiri all made them down the stretch. Got to give Kudos to Ben Watson ( call could have gone either way) and the Pats D-Line for there performance tonight. Never thought I d say this, Go Indy.

November Rain

Well Mr. Marshal Mathers and Kim tied the knot again. It goes to show you, that once you become famous you have 2 possible relationship choices; date another famous person who understands the plight of fame and be hounded by the paparazzi or go with your first Love no matter how nuts they are good.

Oldest trick in the Book

Your in a heated argument with your girlfriend or wife, suddenly they start crying; quickly the entire scope of the argument has changed and you have lost. That is what happened at the senate confirmation hearings this week. The Democrats were fighting with Alito about his judicial record and clubs he belonged to while in college, and in the background Alito’s wife starts crying. Her tears changed the focus of the hearing for the general public from Alito to the harshness of the democrats questioning. While her tears were most likely genuine, they were a savant political move.

Clinton Playing It Safe

Hillary Clinton has had a relatively quite senate career. She has not been embroiled in many scandals or being extremely vocal on many issues. Recently she picked an issue to be vocal about; she pointed to a recent study about lack of body armor causing soldiers deaths to criticize the Bush administration. This is a small but important issue and a good political one for Hillary. Hillary will continue with these small issues until she officially declares her candidacy and then is forced to comment on larger issues.

My Space, Murdock, and the Moral Watch Dogs.

Robert Murdock the conservative billionaire who owns Fox/Fox news and countless news papers recently bought Myspace for over a half a billion dollars. Fox News’s moral watchdogs like Sean Hannity and Bill O Reilly love to go after any entity they think is corrupting children in some way. ( ie Ludachris, MTV,  Grand Theft Auto, ext) Any quick search of Myspace will find tons of teenage girls posting provocative pictures of themselves. Now here is the question; will the conservative morality police that are employed by various companies that Murdock owns attack Myspace even though Robert Murdock owns Myspace and signs their paychecks?

Cheney Will Step Down

Dick Cheney has been to the hospital recently for various health problems. For his health problems and other reasons, Cheney will not seek the Republican nomination in 08 thus leavening a pretty wide open field in 08; McCain, Rudy, Condi, Allen, Romney, Frist ext…Reagan and Clinton ( our last two term presidents) both had there vice presidents easily anointed  to their respective parties nominations. Bush would also like this ability to choose his successor. In addition, republican strategists would most likely want to avoid a drawn out republican primary season with the specter of Hillary Clinton looming large over the 08 race. A convergence of all the aforementioned factors will lead to Dick Cheney stepping down after the 06 midterm elections. Bush will select a new vice president and thus be able to leave a successor. The job is Rice’s if she wants it, but if she is true to her word and does not wish to run, George Allen will be Bush’s pick.

It is the Same Book

After being repeatedly encouraged to do so by a coworker, I started reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. I am about two thirds of the way through and I have come to the conclusion that it is pretty much the same exact book as The Da Vinci Code. Both books plot threads are almost exactly the same; a late night phone call, a hot daughter whose genius father has been murdered, a methodical assassin, a secret organization rising again, clues in architecture ext… Both books are fast reads and have interesting conspiracy theories, but Dan Brown needs to have a little more variety in the plot the next time around.

Quick Hits

First off

Damn the ABC to hell for not showing Kay Hanley singing the national anthem; if it was some hack like Kelly Clarkson ,I bet they would have found time for it.

The Patriots won without playing there best yesterday; too many penalties, dropped balls and potential turnovers. Smart move by not playing Bruschi in a game that we knew we could win without him. Ben Watson was Ben Coatesesque in his game breaking catch and run yesterday. Kudos to Troy Brown for his Ice Breaking TD catch and DB play. Finally, Willie seems to able to find the fountain of youth at the most important times like last night were he got his post season record sacks.

January 7, 2006

Pats Prediction

Pats 27-Jaguars 20: The Pats will get an early lead via an open 5 wide pass offence. Jags will slowly climb back in the game in the second half, but eventually they will fall short with a key turnover and the Pats will run the clock out.

January 6, 2006

Homecoming

Despite her move to Los Angeles there are few people who uniquely represent the essence of Boston more then Kay Hanley. Last night, even after all these years, she delivered a quintessential Kay show. She blended classic LTC like “Because of You” with classic solo Kay such as “fall” and mixed in some new songs like the amazingly catchy “it hurts.” Because she only plays a few shows in Boston every year, the crowd was packed with many of the inner core of those who have worshiped at the Rock Goddess alter that is Kay. Plus, Red Sox pitcher Lenny Dinardo was there.

News Overload

So here it goes; First a big fuck you to the inaccurate, insensitive, incompetent assholes who made the grief for the coal miners families worse by initially reporting that 12 miners had been found alive. Next, Ariel Sharon the Prime Minister of Israel appears to be in his last days. Hopefully a power vacuum does not follow further destabilizing the already tenuous piece talks. On a lighter notes, Vince Young just completed one of the all time great athletic performances in a big game to lead Texas to the national championship; Lindsay Lohan  admits to having a eating disorder; something anyone who witnessed her sad deterioration from voluptuous hottie to waif already knew. Finally, Jon Stewart will attempt to liven up the Oscars; he will soon be named host.

Shit Going to Hit The Fan

Jack Abromoff, a Washington lobbyist is going to partially save his ass by ratting out members of congress who he bribed. This is going to be the first huge story once the names start coming out. If the rumors of a possible name are true, Congressmen Tom Delay will not be able to delay justice being served to him for much longer.

January 3rd 2006

It Could Be Worse

If you think your job sucks, be thankful you are not working as a coal miner; these guys ( and gals) have to spend there day a mile underground, with toxic fumes all around, and always in the back of there mind the possibility of something horrible like what happened to the trapped miners yesterday in West Virginia. Here is hoping that those trapped beat the odds and make it out alive.

Domination

This past Christmas weeks record sales were dominated by RNB and hip hop. Mary J, Jamie Foxx, and Biggie had huge debuts. What is interesting is all these artists careers began in the early 90s dispelling the stereotype that modern Rap and RNB acts do not have staying power.

6 in a row!

BC has the current streak consecutive bowl game wins with 6; while this seems like a good thing, it is actually a reflection of BC underachievement in the regular season. Because of there underachievement they end up in a lesser bowl game against a lesser opponent

December 27, 2005

Exhibition game

The last game of the institution of Monday Night Football felt like an exhibition game. The Patriots seemed to be trying out new plays and working on the running game, while the Jets seemed more interested it getting Vinny his record TD pass then winning the game. Furthermore, Law’s interception of Brady was like one of there epic practice matches from years past.

It Came Just The Same

Despite Bill O’reilly and others paranoia that somehow stores employees wishing people Happy Holidays would cause the end of Christmas, Christmas came just the same. To quote Dr. Seuss; Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas means a little bit more.

A Good Year?

President Bush called this a good year for the American people. Did he consult the people who had there lives ruined by various hurricanes before he came to that conclusion?

We got Him!

The sox just signed John Flaherty; all our problems are now solved.  Now we just need to sign Tim Naehring, Scott Cooper, Phil Plantier, and Bob Zupzic.

Johnny Damon is now a Yankee. While the impact on the diamond is significant, off the diamond I am surprised he went to New York to be an anonymous Yankee when he was associated with the sox so much these past few years and became and individual star

What the fuck did Melinda Gates do to be named one of Time’s people of the year. All she did was donate her husband’s money.

December 19, 2005

Line Down

Everyone is talking about the Colts loss, but little attention is being paid to the fact a few of there linemen got backed up. With the emerging Pats front 7 and a banged up Colts line, Manning will be in trouble.

December 18, 2005

Kudos

Kudos To Watertown’s own Deluxe Town Diner; it  is the first restaurant on the east coast to heat itself with its own resources; its new omni waste burner uses the recycled filtered vegetable oil the restaurant uses to cook to heat the oil. In the end this saves money, energy, and the environment.

Guess Who’s back?

After today’s shellacking of the Buccaneers, the rest of the NFL must all have got a tingle of fear down there spins with the possibility that the Patriots have return to there 04 form.

State Legislators hit in the head?

State Legislators are strongly considering a bill that would force all soccer players from college down to wear helmets. These dumbasses need to understand that part of what makes playing sports fun is the inherent risk of injury. If you don’t want your kids to ever get hurt, let them sit and play video games all day and become fat.

Like Father Like Son

Mitt Romney has announced that he will not seek reelection as Massachusetts governor. I know many might be thinking Mitt Romney is governor of Massachusetts? Why do I always see him making speeches in Iowa, New York, and North Carolina?  Well in case u you did not know Mitt fancies himself as presidential material. Someone needs to politely tell him that if he actually goes down the presidential path he will suffer the same fate as his father’s presidential run. But, I am sure Jay Severin will be there to cuddle with after Mitt finds out that no one knows who he is.

P.S. Belmont Sucks, Tom Reilly for governor.

December 14, 2005

The Young and the Red Sox

The Redsox are no longer just a baseball team. They have turned into a full time soap opera; Will Ben and Jed last longer then Ben and Jen? Will it turn out that Theo’s Twin brother was really the one who resigned from the Red Sox on Halloween and the real Theo is currently being held in captivity sending trade proposal like Matt Clement to the Mariners for center fielder Jeremy Reed via Morse code to Ben and Jed? Will the Red Sox buy all the property around Fenway and rename Kenmore Square Lucchino Square?   Will Theo jump on stage at the Hot Stove cool music show and perform a stirring rendition of LL Cool J’s mama said knock you out ( “don’t call it a comeback I been here for years”) Will Kay Hanley be named VP of Red Sox records one of the new ever expanding branches of the red sox media empire? Will Manny forget that he sold his condo and continue to go on living in it even after another family has moved in? Will Curt Schilling spontaneously combust after going over 2 weeks without sharing his opinions on what is going on? Will Roger Clemens resign with the sox in order to be closer to his home in Texas? Will I continue this rambling post in order to kill the last few minutes until my class starts?

Stay tuned to the Young and the Redsox to find these answers and more.

December 13, 2005

Holiday Blues

If you got the Holiday blues (or even a case as Holly GoLightly would say the mean reds) here is a sure antidote to break you out of your doldrums; Kay Hanley just unearthed an old LTC Christmas song on her webpage called Where The Fuck Are My Presents" you can also find it on the LTC my space page www.myspace.com/letterstocleo

Here Comes the Backlash

There is going to be a huge conservative backlash against the Oscors this year because movies like Brokeback Mountain, Syriana, and Good Night and Good Luck will get multiple odds. Look for Sean Hannity to have a hissy fit.

Still Standing

Roger Clemons, Mo Vaughn, Nomar Garciaparra, Pedro Martinez, Edger Renteria, Derek Lowe, random players, owners, and GM have come and gone but Tim Wakefield has stayed and now in way is the face of the franchise slowly climbing the all time sox ranks in many categories. Who would have thought of this when Dan Duquette signed him over 10 years ago?

December 8th 2005

Bye Bye Edger Renteria

By Edger, try not to end any post seasons weakly grounding out or make

any crucial errors while on your way to the airport.

It seems whenever a BC basketball or football team quickly climbs the rankings, they must lose their next game.

Steven Colbert vs. Bill O’reilly

The Colbert Report and The O’reilly factor conveniently are both on at the same time during both of their airings. Here is a fun activity; pretend you have no knowledge of who either man is and switch back and forth between the two shows. Unless you knew before hand that Colbert was the satire on comedy central it would be impossible to tell which show was the satire and which was the actual “news” show.

December 5th 2005

Wow

The Philadelphia Eagles with their 42-0 loss just gave the archetypical performance of a pro sports team that has mailed in its season.

December 4th 2005

Guess whose back?

Looking at the Pats roster key players are slowly coming back. With the division soon wrapped up look for the experienced Pats to try to get everyone (except for Rodney) healthy for the post season run.

A la cart cable TV

I love the idea going through congress to let the public be able to  buy cable channels on an individual basis. This would be a boon to consumers who could tailor their TV experience. In the current format it is like if someone wanted to get the hamburger for dinner, but also had to buy everything else on the menu to get it.

November 29, 2005

 It is Over

The Bruins’ season is lost. I almost want them to do bad now and get a high pick.

November 28, 2005

Cyber Monday?

Someone needs to tell the media to stop making shit like Cyber Monday up and actually do some investigating on what is actually happening in this country; for one thing the strong early reports of retail over the weekend may have been inflated.

November 27, 2005

No Answers

Injuries have made the Pats an impotent team. Luckily they already have the division wrapped up. If I was Belichick I would have the injured players sit out till the playoffs. There is no reason for the pats to risk injury to by having people come back to early when the Pats will not get a bye, but will be a division winner.

November 26, 2005

Senators

The Ottawa Senators are far from a deliberative body. They are the most exciting team in hockey. One wonder just like the Colts though if they can finally break through this year and win a cup.

November 25, 2005

The Lonely Kicker

This time of year, you are likely to hear the Adam Sandler’s Hanukah song or Thanksgiving song on the radio. But during yesterday’s Cowboys vs. Broncos game another Sandler song was appropriate; “The Lonely Kicker” in honor of the Cowboys kicker who missed a potential game winning field goal whose name I already forgot.

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 23, 2005

Help Bring the Troops home

Tomorrow is another Thanksgiving where 150,000 American service men and women are away from their families fighting a war that was started  based on erroneous assertions. (ie WMD, greeted as liberators, Iraq/Al Quada connection ext)  Furthermore, the war in now a stalemate with a non existent Iraqi military, an insurgency that can not actually defeat the US military, but a US military that can not wipe out the insurgency.

Recently congressmen and veteran John Murtha had a proposal to bring the troops home; but neither democrats nor republicans supported his proposal. I urge everyone to call or write their congressmen to tell them to support John Murtha on his call for immediate withdrawal. If you do not know how to contact your congressmen go to congress.org to find the name and contact information for your local representative.

Another Roger?

Kudus to the sox if they pulled off the trade to get Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett for Hanley Ramirez and Annabel Sanchez. Lowell is gold glove third basemen, but his power numbers may have been artificially juiced earlier in his career. The jewel of the Trade is Becket a 25 year old legitimate ace with world series experience. Both of the Sox prospects that have a lot of potential, but by the time they become good major leaguers the Marlins will not be able to afford them so we can try to get them back.

November 21, 2005

Props to John Murtha

He did a great job on Meet The Press yesterday in articulating a plan for withdrawal from Iraq and giving his rational for it. People who try to demonize him and call him unpatriotic just end up looking silly because Murtha reeks of credibility. Even if you do not agree at least he articulated a side in the debate.

RIP Steve Belichick

RIP. It is interesting how many people in sports Belichick, Parcels, Clemens, et al still manage to show up for a game even when a close family member has recently died. Guess it is just their way of coping.

Ever heard this story before?

African youths and immigrant populations riot in the street burning cars and buildings and even causing one death; The riots were spark when 2 immigrants were electrocuted while allegedly being chased by authorities and because of general community frustrations because of lack of jobs. A story like this is usually would be thought to be taking place in an American inner city not “enlightened” Paris. Just goes to show, no matter how progressive you may be, you can’t make everyone happy.

Its conspiracy theory time; George Bush was told to nominate Miers by the Cheney cabal. Cheney knew that republicans would stonewall her nomination and then they could nominate a really conservative judge. It would be harder for the democrats to oppose this judge since Miers would already have been knocked off and the public would not have patients for another nominee knocked down.

Theo Epstein may be as big the sox biggest free agent this off-season. I always thought that sox president Larry Lucchino micro managed the sox too much and it appears that Theo Epstein may be frustrated as well and wants as part of his new contract to report only to John Henry and not Lucchino. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

No Gas for Class

Some schools in Georgia and Oklahoma are cutting the school week to 4 days in order to save gas. It is interesting to note, out of all the ways we actually sacrifice to conserve gas, the first one many think of is cutting back on education. I support the Don’t Buy Gas on Sunday boycott that is getting some momentum in order to protest price gauging and conservation in general. In addition, people should do their best to avoid driving their cars on Sunday or and carpool to church when necessary.

Life Imitates the Big Screen

A few years ago, I remember watching a scene in the movie Independence Day where there is a giant traffic jam of cars trying to flea a city being attacked by aliens. What I thought was unrealistic about the scene was that even in the face of disaster of an alien attack, no one in was using the empty inbound highway to get out of the city. Flash forward to real life Rita, and we have a giant traffic jam going outbound and an empty inbound. It took city planners 2 days to figure out to open the inbound lanes to outbound. Learn from the movies people.

September 22, 2005

Germany’s Gore vs. Bush

The Merkel vs. Schroeder election in Germany appears to be as close as Bush v. Gore. On the other hand, with Germany’s parliamentary system look for both candidates to do some coalition building to try to get power not legal challenges. This is a huge election and could change the face of world politics because a Merkel victory would mean a lot closer US/German relations. Furthermore, their would be a women heading one of the most important countries in the world which is always an event.

Clinton Global Initiative

Many people speculate Bill Clinton wants to head the UN, and this week he is acting like he already has the job. Clinton is holding the Clinton global initiative at the Sheraton Hotel in New York. Over a 1000 world leaders will attend including: British Prime Minister Tony Blair, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch, General Electric Chairman Jeff Immelt, and investor George Soros. The group will discuss the major issues: global poverty, wars, global warming ext. I am curious to see what ideas and actions come from this.

Baseball Ruminations

While Chris Carpenter should win the Cy young with the best pitching performance this year, Dontrelle Willis should be the league’s MVP. Tonight he helped the Marlins leapfrog Houston for the wild card lead with a home run and a complete game for his 21 victory. David Ortiz again tonight won a game with an extra inning home run further cementing his status as the generations most clutch hitter. In addition, the sox Papelbon just solidified his post season roster spot with 3 great innings of shut out ball too get the win.

It’s not my fault

In an email to friends and family former FEMA leader Michael Brown blames the media's 24 hour news cycle for his troubles and the reason no one wants to go into public service. I guess we should all just look the other way when a public official is grossly inept and lies on his resume.

September 8, 2005

Patriots Prediction

Patriots 31 Raiders 17: The game will be close after about two quarters tied 10 to 10. The Pats will score a TD going into half time. In the second half Randy Moss will be striped of the ball leading to another Patriots touchdown. The teams will trade TD in the fourth quarter.

September 7, 2005

Déjà vu

That was not a replay of last year’s playoffs; David Ortiz just hit another walk off homerun to beat the Angels. If the season ended today, the Red Sox would play the Angels in the first round. I am guessing that the Angels might learn their lesson by now and just walk Ortiz in the late innings.

September 6, 2005

Moving on up

The Naming of John Roberts as the nominee for Chief Justice was a shrewd political move. Roberts is young and could serve for 40 years; furthermore, he did not generate a lot of controversy with his initial nomination and the democrats would waste political capital attacking him that they will probably need when Bush nominates someone even more conservative  to fill the reopened O’Conner seat.

September 5, 2005

A.P.B

On this Labor Day, I ask a simple yet important question; where the fuck is Dick Cheney? When Bush was on vacation, at least we knew where he was. With all the turmoil the country is in, from Hurricane Katrina to the Supreme Court having two open vacancies, one would hope that the Vice President might actually be seen or heard from. I can’t remember the last time I saw the guy;In addition, I ran Google and Yahoo searches on Dick Cheney and Hurricane Katrina and I can’t

find a single comment he has made about the catastrophe.I just hope he is all right.

September 4, 2005

Right to die at home?

Last week at this time it was known a super hurricane would hit New Orleans which is a city below sea level; despite the fact that their was a huge possibility of the city flooding, many people did not evacuate the city because they did not have the means to do so or did not want to leave their homes. In the case of the latter, should the government have declared martial law and forced the people to leave who did not want to? Many people who I know, especially in my family would not leave their homes even if there was a 90% chance they would be destroyed in a storm. This is a very similar situation ethical compared to Terry Shiavo and the assisted suicide debate.

Win for Bikers

With gas prices and obesity rates souring one way to stay fit and save money is to bike to work or for fun. I urge you to support MassBIke ( link in link page) in order for them to keep passing crucial legislation like this: MassBike worked with our Congressional delegation to support key bicycling projects, such as Safe Routes to School, and our legislators came through in the recently-passed federal transportation bill. Additionally, a good number of local bike path projects also received funding through special “earmarks” the delegation secured.

EU vs. Iran

The United States needs to let the EU deal with Iran and their nuclear ambitions. The United States can not be in the forefront of every situation and it would behoove the US to give the EU a chance to flex its political/military. If it appears the EU, after a while is failing to prevent Iran from getting the bomb, then the US should begin to interject itself more into the situation.

With the revelations about Raphael Palmerio and Jason Giambi, and the strong suspicions of Sosa, Bonds, McGuire of using steroids, Writers need to put former players who were on the Hall of Fame bubble like Jim Rice in higher regard. Rice was dominant and the most feared hitter in baseball for years. While he did not have longevity, he skills eroded quicker then current players because he was not getting a boost from illegal enhancements.

Forbidden Ticket

Joe Biden said on the Daily Show yesterday that he would be willing to run on a ticket with John McCain or an other Republican. While this statement is most likely political posturing by Biden in an attempt moderate his public image, there is a chance a combo ticket could come to fruition. The primary process lends it self to success to polarizing politicians who cater to their base. If it becomes difficult for moderates to win their parties nomination, I would not be surprised if a centrist ticket emerges.

Manny Ramirez may have topped new Hall of Fame inductee Wade Boggs for best referring to themselves in the third person quote of all time: After Sunday’s game Manny said “That’s Manny being Manny,' he's great man... this is the place for me... I'm back!"

Wade Boggs once said after being asked why he did not have more RBIs “if Wade Boggs was hitting behind Wade Boggs, then Wade Boggs would have a lot more RBIs.”

The NHL and its players union have appeared to reach an agreement pretty close to the one Harry Sinden has been preaching for years. Let’s help the body fight the disease.

The problem of extremism and terrorism in the Muslim world needs a Muslim solution.  But there are things the west can do to assist them and to force their hand. The biggest is stop giving money to the people who fund extreme Wuhhabism. This can be achieved by not giving money to our alleged friends the Saudis. We need to become oil independent. I call on all United States political leaders the same way Kennedy called on the nation to reach the moon to call on the nation to become oil independent. This can be done by opening more nuclear plants ( France does it ), wind farms where possible, more use of biogas ( like the Swedes are doing with their buses and trains), higher fuel efficiency standards for automobiles, have all new house created to maximize energy efficiency, and even using the strategic Alaskan oil reserves ( sorry caribou). Then we will be in a better position to force the Saudis and other nations hand to deal with the extremism in their midst better. The blame, America, the west, and the Jews for everything thought process is encouraged by rich Muslims and Arabic governments who want the people to have a scapegoat instead of looking at their own government’s corruption and exploitation of their people.

Worth a thousand words

Despite the horror of today’s attack in London the image that will remain in my mind is Tony Blair speaking to the world in-between President Bush and Jacque Chirac standing behind him. Blair has literally between the EU and the USA for years now trying to balance the two powers and broker agreements. Now Blair with the attacks on London has the chance to go down as a historical leader and figure. If he can find a way to get the EU and US to speak in one voice (his) on a number of issues from terrorism to global warming then he will be remembered in a Churchillian manner.

July 6, 2005

London Calling

Today naming of London as the host city for the 2012 Olympic Games is yet another victory for Tony Blair. Blair has had the inevitable task of being the bridge to from the ever growing EU and the USA. He has managed this task skillfully and also domestically done a record term as PM for the Labour party. London Olympic win is another feather in his cap and a slap to his rival Chirac who will have to settle for eating bad English food if he wants to go the 2012 games.

Supreme Justice Comeuppance

Recently the Supreme Court ruled that it was ok for state and local government to take privately owned homes and then raze them in order to for more lucrative real estate deals. Darrel Clements has come up with a brilliant idea in order to show the court how anti-American this ruling is. Clements is trying to get the local government to take Justice David Souter’s home in order to build the Lost Liberty hotel which can be justified because it would generate more revenue for the community. I call on all Americas who feel it is pornographic ( and not in the good way)  to give the government such broad power to seize private property to support Clements effort to take Souter’s house.

Useful waste

Sweden will soon start running the first train in the world to run on Biogas a renewable energy source made out of organic waste. Biogas has many advantages in that is renewable, reduces green house admission and does not need to be imported because the materials to make it can be found anywhere. The biggest snag to the energy technology is that it is expensive even more so then diesel to produce. But, if scientist can like most technologies figure out ways to make it more cost effective over time this is a great step for fuel conservationists. In addition to the train Sweden has 779 buses that run on biogas; the world should thank Sweden for its commitment to reusable energy development.

The Army has missed recruiting goals that were already scaled down for the fourth straight month. Is this because people are less patriotic and do not want to serve their country? Message to the Ladies

Unless you are truly way overweight you are not fat. From my girlfriend, her friends, at work, at school, celebrities, everyone all I hear from women is that they are trying to lose weight; the vast majority of the time these girls or women who are trying to lose weight either have a normal or skinny body. The ironic part of it all is that if these women got a skinny as their goal was they would be less attractive then they currently are. The most well known example of this is Lidsay Lohan; once the personification of hotness now she looks grotesque after losing too much weight. Speaking as a guy there is nothing less attractive then a girl is skin and bones. So please smart and beautiful women of the world stop worrying about your weight.

Cold Play vs. White Stripes

No two bands have garnered more hype this century then ColdPlay and The White Stripes. Last Tuesday both bands released new albums; in this case The White Stripes lived up to quality expectations and while ColdPlay still puts forth a solid effort they do not justify the hype machine. ColdPlay seems to be a little to earnest in this effort, while Jack White effortlessly seems to make simple catchy and creative tunes.

Dump Dumbass Dean

Dean recently said that that all republicans are the same. This is any idiotic and false statement. Any political observe who unlike Dean has a keen eye  will tell you that there is growing schism in the republican party between Bush’s neocons, old cons, the RINO republicans, and religious right. Many old cons are deficit Hawks and want the federal government to stay away from state issues two things Bush’s has not done. Then there are the McCain, Giuliani, and Swarzenaggers who are pro-choice. The 08 primary will be a battle for control of the Republican Party between all these factions. If Dean thinks that Bush, Buchanan, and McCain are the same he is a reactionary idiot just like I suspected of him. I call on all responsible democrats to dump dumbass Dean.

First Lady talks some sense

Last week President Bush the leader of the free world was not stopped from his bike ride in order to be told that the White House (where the man lives for god sake) and the Capital building were being evacuated due to a plane going into restricted airspace. First Lady Laura Bush recently said the obvious statement that he should have been interrupted from his ride thus contradicting the official stance of the White House. What an interesting idea she has that when the White House is being evacuated someone should tell the fucking president. Thanks to the First Lady for stating this obvious fact because out of all the things the media makes into issues this seems not to have stuck.

Ms. Federline’s fate

Britney Federline AKA Britney Spears has a new realty show. What the show will illustrate much fate can seem to caste its shadow over a person. Oedipus, in the Greek Tragedy, was fated to kill his father and marry his mother. In the classic story, Oedipus fulfills that fate even though actions are taken by his father and himself in order for it not to happen. The moral of the story is that sometimes things will happen and there is not a damn thing you can do about it. So it is with Britney. When Britney was young maybe the fates said she would be married at 22 to a mediocre man, pregnant, and working as a waitress at her dad’s restaurant. Even though Britney spent most of her life trying to avoid that fate, fate again won out and she fulfilled her destiny

Newsweek Fucks Up Big Time

Newsweek admits that it is report of United States troops flushing a Koran down the toilet was erroneous. Cats and Dogs living together

Hilary Clinton and Newt Gingrich recently teamed up to support legislation that would give government assistance to the health care industry in order for the industry to streamline using computer technology in order to cut cost and improve care. While the bill is a non-controversial one, the fact that Hilary and Newt were on the same stage is a big deal. Hilary over the past few years has been praised by many high profile republicans such as McCain, Frist, and Gingrich. This is good news for Hilary who can point to this praise as evidence that she is not a Liberal Loon witch will be the label that republicans will try to stick to her. I can even see a campaign commercial of sound bites from republicans praising Hilary.

Harkin Amendment

The U.S. Senate has started debating the federal transportation bill (passed in March by the House of Representatives). Tomorrow, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is expected to introduce a “Complete Streets” amendment to the bill, which would make it federal law that bicyclists and pedestrians must be accommodated on streets and highways (due to the work of State Rep. Anne Paulsen and MassBike, this has been Massachusetts law since 1996, but only two other states in the country have this provision).

Please call or send an email message to Senator Kennedy and Kerry’s offices no later than noon tomorrow (Wednesday, May 11) to ask them to support the “Harkin Amendment to the Surface Transportation Bill.” This amendment deals with policy changes only and is budget-neutral. You can contact Jay McCarthy in Senator Kennedy’s office (202-224-4543) or jay_mccarthy@kennedy.senate.gov and Jamie Hunter in Senator Kerry’s office (202-224-2742) or jamie_hunter@kerry.senate.gov.

Rino on the loose.

John McCain recently stated that he will side with democrats on the issue of judicial filibusters; it is his ability to cross party lines like this occasionally that make him popular among independents and a media darling. His courting of the center will obviously help him in the 08 general election. But, it is his courting of the middle that will lead to his inability to win the Republican primary because his fellow Republicans will call him a RINO ( Republican in name only.) If he is as big as a maverick as he portrays himself to be, then he should run as an independent in 08 and really shake thing up.

Orwellian progress

A government official recently claimed the recent up swing in Iraqi violence is a sign of progress against the insurgency. While there is a rationale to this statement, that the increased attacks are a sign of an ever more desperate insurgency, it seems that this type of statement has been made many times before. If we are making progress, should not eventually the violence start to decrease? Furthermore, I suspect the second large amounts of United States troops withdraw their insurgence will step up their attacks even more. It may be later this year or ten years down the road, but eventually the Iraqi people if they truly want a democracy will have to rise and fight for it themselvesMay 8, 2005

Home Court Abort

In sports, one of the advantages to having a good regular season is home court (or field, ice) advantage in the playoffs. But, on the rare occasion in a series home court does not matter at all and in the case of the Celtics was a disadvantage. The Celtics had many young players this series and Piece, Walker, and Payton did not do a good enough job leading them. This caused the Celtics to have more anxiety playing in front of their home fans then away since they were worrying to much about fucking up in front of their fans.

May 6, 2005

Pissed Paul Pierced

Everyone who watched last nights Celtics game is talking about Paul Piece technical foul at the end of the game to get ejected. Nearly all are calling Pierce a bonehead for his actions; in a backward way he inspired his team to greater heights. Losing Pierce allowed Walker and the other players to take over and shine. The game was a great pick me up for the C’s and I predict unlike the past series games it will carry over to game 7.

Things keep getting worse, or do they?

Politicians, athletes and other high profile people of today, their conduct is just terrible. There are all a bunch of high profile crooks. This is a common misconception that many people propagate.  In truth, today it seems like this because more high profile people are being caught in scandal and the mass media makes it more wide known. Their were more crooks, creeps, and cokeheads in high profile position in the past then today, but it was not as widely known. Today’s white hot spotlight is a good thing especially when it comes to politicians. Yesterday, ruling in Congress that is going to allow a fuller probe of Tom Delay is another example of people in power’s questionable behavior being scrutinized. This gives people in power forewarning that if their conscience does not cause them to stop unethical behavior, there is a good chance they will be investigated and caught.

Keith Foulke blew another game today; Foulke, not blessed with over powering fastball must rely on deception of speed to succeed. One way he does this is with his unorthodox short arm delivery to the mound. While many in Sox nation will be freaking out after yesterday’s debacle, Foulke will turn it around this season once he gets his delivery mechanics back into sync.

Bike Bill Hearing

MassBike has just learned that the legislature's Public Safety Committee will hold a hearing on the Bicyclists' Bill of Rights and Responsibilities (H. 1411) this Wednesday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. in State House Hearing Room B-1. This is a crucial piece of legislation that codifies bicyclists' right to be on the road, requires police to receive training in bike laws, and mandates that drivers check before opening their car doors. We need you to come show your support for this bill! It is essential that we have a good turnout of cycling advocates. Please email mike@massbike.org if you'll be able to attend.

Quick fix drug culture

In today’s culture many people turn to quick fixes when it comes to problems with their children. Instead, of devoting their time, giving guidance, and being patient with their children, parents seek quick fixes when it comes minor childhood and adolescent issues like tremendously hyperactive children or excessive moodiness. They solution too many times today is to prescribe the children mind altering medication. Because this practice is recent, there are not enough long term studies, but I am willing to bet that medicating the still developing mind causes more developmental issues then it helps. One of the issues that overmedication may cause is children being likely to turn to drugs for their own problems or and for recreational purposes. A recent study done by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America found that 20 percent of US teens have abused prescriptions drugs to get high.

The Kids are alright

The national prognosticators picked the Pacers to preside over the Celtics this series with their experience and alleged deeper bench. What they did not take into account is that with experience comes age. The experienced Pacers look just plain old as the young Celtics led by Jefferson and Banks ran up and down the court getting buckets in transition, hitting three, and Jefferson specifically dominating the older Dale Davis down low. Jefferson is a Jermaine O’Neil or Amare Stoudumiere type talent and the Pacers and other teams will be remiss if they do not take note and deal with his presence accordingly.

Draft Day

One of the best aspects of being a sports fan is the ability to try to make decisions along with your team. Whether they be in game choices like when to take out a pitcher or it go for it on 4th down, or general manager type activities like who to trade to today’s event the NFL draft. The draft is a day of hope for the down trodden franchisees and a day for the successful to plug in holes for another championship run. All the while, fans get to guess what who each team will pick and who they would prefer their team to get. A few years back the big question in the Patriots draft was go with offense and get WR David Terrell or Defense and get Richard Seymour. Well, the pats got Seymour won 3 championships, and just recently signed David Terrell who has yet to fill his potential

S. 233 Caring for Children Act

This bill will assist in getting child care providers better training; this is extremely necessary considering how much of the wiring of the brain is formed during the early years

Official Title as Introduced: 'A bill to increase the supply of quality child care. '

2/1/2005--Introduced. Caring for Children Act - Directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants to eligible entities to develop: (1) distance learning child care training technology infrastructures; and (2) model technology-based training courses for child care providers and child care workers, to be provided through distance learning programs made available through the infrastructure. Requires, to the maximum extent possible, that such grants be awarded in regions with the fewest training opportunities for child care providers. Directs the Secretary to establish a demonstration program of competitive grants to States to help them provide funds to encourage the establishment and operation of small business employer-operated child care programs. Requires a State to give priority for such assistance to applicants that desire to form a consortium to provide child care in an area where such care is not generally available or accessible. Allows such consortia to include businesses, nonprofit agencies or organizations, local governments, or other appropriate entities.

Call your senators to support this bill.

Stop Political Patronage

Recently Tom Delay has been under fire for many reasons; one of them is that his political action committee paid his wife and daughter over a half a million dollars. In was also reveled that more then 2 dozen other senators pay close family members salaries with their funds. This is an unethical practice that needs to be stop. When a person donates to a political campaign they need to be sure the money is not going to the candidate’s daughter to buy a new Coach Bag.

The Next Pope

I do not know too much about the new Pope Benedict aside from the news stories about since he was named, but I can make a pretty educated guess that he will not be pope for very long. Thus the next Pope will be a more important choice. If the Catholic Church is smart, they will make a choice from Latin America or Africa where the faith is getting strong unlike Europe and the United States.

The Next Frontier

Humans not content with trashing our home planted have official polluted space with our junk. In our orbit a piece of 31-year old United States rocket and part of a recently launched Chinese rocket collided. In a related note, how about this for a science fiction plotline? Humans lack of reusable resources will result in our further dependence on nuclear power. The problem of were to store our nuclear waste will be solved by launching Nuclear waste periodically towards Mars. When the waste gets to Mars its contents will heat up long frozen bodies of water and cause dormant single cell organisms to evolve at a rapid pace. This organism within two hundred years of evolving will pass us intellectually. The new Martian race will all wear brooms on their head and will send their a trooper named Marvin to the moon to blow the earth up with his Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator.

Trail by Talk Show

In the Thursday Redsox vs. Yankees game an incident occurred between a fan and Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield. While anyone watching the game could see that it was not a big deal, it was quickly blown out of proportion by the local and even national media. What happened the next day was surreal. I turned on the local sports talk radio station to hear some scores and hopefully some decent baseball analysis about Randy Johnson struggling or Reneteria breaking out of his slump. Instead, I got trail by talk show. The hosts of the show and caller after caller analyzing the video tape to try to determine the intention of fan: was he punching Sheffield, swiping at the ball, knocking off his hat, doing the windmill to wave the runners home, just pumping his fist into the air ext… Then came of stream of character witness in the fans defense callers claiming to be life long friends saying he was a great guy and a former coach at Curry College. Then the calls came saying he was a jerk and that there is proof in an old Globe story someone found saying he got into a verbal altercation while at Curry with another coach. Next, a female caller claiming he is always drunk at the games and swears in front of her little children.

I do not know this man or if he was trying to hit Sheffield. I suspect that many of the callers into the station also did not know this man and were merely giving opinions to feel important. This is a scary situation when some random individual has his life examined by thousands and he is judged as person by hearsay, speculation, and just people making up bullshit.

Old Timers

The Yankees and Red Sox are givens to both make the playoff, right? While both teams are extremely talented with high payrolls there is a common thread to both teams that could make jeopardize their recent play off permanence; they are both old and tired. Many of the most important players on both teams are up their in age. Furthermore, they have played more games then any other team in the last few years with many of those games being intense and hard fought. In the end as all predicted they will both likely make the playoffs, but the on the road their now and then the gray hairs on both teams will revel themselves.

King of the Hill

Tonight Curt Schilling is going to be back on the mound for the hometown club. It is early in the year but a strong start for Curt could be a little demoralizing for the Yankees. The acquisition of Johnson for the Yankees gave them an edge going into the season, but a strong debut by Curt that shows our ace is healthy and will match theirs will give them pause in the euphoria over Johnson. Further, a win tonight would put the high powered Yanks at 3-5.

Right man was on the mound

Yesterday, many in Redsox Nation were hoping Curt Shilling could make his first start during the home opener, but the man who most deserved the stage was on the mound. The resurrection of the redsox after 3 years in the doldrums in the early 90s was accomplished By Tim Wakefield in the 95 season. His great year leading the sox to the playoff inspired the front office to concentrate on building a winner now. So when Harrington left Theo and the trio only needed to add a few final touches to win the series. Furthermore, Wakefield has the longest tenure on the sox and has been the starter, closer, middle relief, mops up pitcher, pinch runner, and even a pinch hitter. Again yesterday the knuckleball was fluttering and the Yanks were swinging at air.

Eclipses signal end of error?

Today the pope will be laid to rest; their will also be a solar eclipse. When the Red Sox won the World Series and laid the curse of the bambino to rest, their was a lunar eclipse that made the moon look blood (like Curt sock) red. Now I am not one to promote superstitions, but if during the next eclipse Castro is overthrown then we might want to start watching the skies a little more closely for the next monumental event.

Let their Light (for 2 more months)

Congressmen Ed Markey is cosponsoring a bill that extends daylight saving time two months. "The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use," said Markey, who cited Transportation Department estimates that showed the two-month extension would save the equivalent of 10,000 barrels of oil a day. This bill is a great and innovative idea to  save energy.

No need to panic

Do not get up in arms over the sox losing two straight to the Yankees. The Yankees after losing last year are more naturally motivated and need these games  to save face after last year’s debacle in front of their home fans. The last few years the Sox dominated the Yankees early in the year, and did not win the division.  The only cause for concern is the Sox’s pitching is painfully plodding in its progress. If Wells is not well we need Curt (Theo said he is at his healthiest in years) and Wade Miller to be healthy to kick ass in the down the stretch run and the playoffs.

Hijacking of the Pope legacy

Since his death, I have seen everyone from staunch conservatives to Michael Moore try to use the Pope John Paul the second words to make a case for their pet cause. Media Vultures

The performance of the media has been disgusting the past few weeks. They have been vultures circling, killing time, and just waiting for the next carcass to die. I can just see them all now bitching and moaning that Schiavo, The Pope, Cochran ext. did not wait until sweeps month to die.

Bush’s April Fools

It turns out that our intelligence of possible nuclear and terrorist threats has not improved since 9/11 or the Iraq WMD fiasco according to a presidential commission report; furthermore, we have a doctrine of preemptive actions against potential threats. So we are pretty much sitting in the dark hearing bumps in the night and occasionally swinging blindly at where we think the noise is coming from.

March 31, 2005

Republicans’ Schiavo Schism

A little reported side aspect of the Schiavo story is that it a further example of the schism slowly developing in the Republican Party. Many old school conservatives have had reservations about Bush’s budgets and other policies. His and congress attempted intervention into the Schiavo case was a violent act against state sovereignty rights of the federalist tradition that many conservatives advocate. Bush’s religious beliefs were an obvious factor in him violating the traditional state rights mantra of republicans; his actions widen the rift in the Republican Party that is developing. Prediction: Look for this division to germinate into a giant brawl in the next republican presidential primary because there is no clear cut current choice for 08 and their will be a wide cornucopia of

characters from neo cons, old cons, religious right, libertarian, centrist ext. running for the nomination in 08.

No I am not going to discuss the movie, but the way that many women turn disagreements in their favor. They begin to cry; it leaves a man with the option of being an uncaring jerk or giving in to their wishes. Fenway to Stay

Today’s announcement confirmed what people in the know have long suspected, the Red Sox are staying in Fenway Park. This is a great move, financially and spiritually. Sure people complain about the small seats that face the wrong way, but there is a phrase for those people, Punkass Bitches. While new ballparks provide short term financial gain, any one who has seen the attendance recently at Jacobs Field , The Skydome, Commerica Park ext. knows that the novelty quickly wears off. But the number one reason to stay at Fenway is the field looks beautiful. It has cool quirks like the triangle, the green monster, the ladder, Pesky’s pole, red seat, fans close to actions, et al that are not recently manufactured  novelties like the hill in Minute Maid Park.  Furthermore, its good to know that the players parking sucks too. Spiritually it is the same outfield patrolled by Yaz, Tony C, Williams, Rice, Evans, Damon ext. I concur though that the surrounding area can, should, and will be improved.

High School Shooting Prediction

While the recent High School shooting has been a huge story the past few days and will continue to be for  days, it will not have Columbine legs in terms of media coverage. People will care, but because it occurred in a reservation the story will fade away. With media’s need for rating they must focus on stories that they can sell to the masses. This is why a kidnapped white child from the suburbs makes national news, but not a minority child from the inner city. This is why Laci and Scott Petterson who look like any couple who lives next door is a bigger story in the  news. You only become a long national story today if the media can make every day people think that the tragedy will happen to them. The fact this occurred at a reservation and the masses will not personalize it will make the media lose interest quickly.

Tournament upsets upset regular season

While upsets in the NCAA tournament provide high drama in late March, they make the regular college basketball season trivial. Why should a fan care about the regular season when there is little difference between being a 2end of 10th seed? Sure one schedule is easier in the tournament, but they do not get home court advantage and in the case of BC in their loss, they were playing in an away game atmosphere. If BC starts of 20-0 in the regular season next year no one will care (aside from Ted Sarandis) because it will not really matter what their regular season is come tournament time. In pro sports there is the incentive of home field advantage which is always a huge factor in the playoffs to make the regular season important. Furthermore, in the pro sports there are fewer slots to make the post season in. This is one of the many reasons that in major markets pro sports will always rule.

Alaskan Oil Short Sited.

The Senate, by a 51-49 vote, rejected an attempt by Democrats and GOP moderates to remove a refuge drilling provision from next year's budget. This issue will be more important in terms of campaigns then what will actual happen. Henry Lee, an environment and energy expert at Harvard University, said “It's not a big environmental hit, and it's not a big energy hit.” Drilling probably won’t happen for almost a decade and when it does the amount of oil will not substantial effect energy markets. While the environmental impact may not be as big because of modern drilling techniques, their will be negative environmental consequences.

In the end, drilling should not be supported: negative environmental impacts, little energy gain and most importantly Alaskan drilling sends the wrong message. The long run answer to our energy problems is better conservation, fuel efficiency, and more investment in alternative energy sources. The same way Kennedy made his goal to put a man on the moon; Bush with Congress should challenge the American people to be an energy independent nation in 20 years: energy conservation methods should be taught in school, scholarships should be given to students who go into the field, grant money should go into research and development, and Tax breaks should be given to companies who develop more fuel efficient produce, sales taxes should be removed from cars that get more then 45 miles a gallon highway and 35 city with standards always increasing ext. If we can anticipate social security long terms short comings and debate them, why can’t we do the same with the future potential fuel crisis and energy independence. Additionally, true energy independence will help us win the war on terror.

Kobe “not a man or the man” Bryant

All his life Kobe Bryant wanted to be “The Man.” The LA Lakers gave him that chance and he so far has shown what many already knew; he never was the man, he is not the man, and he most likely will never be the man. Kobe, without Shaq, has so far led LA to an under 500 record and on the outside looking in of the playoff race. Kobe is a very good player, but he is not a great player. Great players make their teammates better and lead. Kobe cares only for Kobe on the court. (he famously kept games close in HS in order to win them in the final few seconds.) In addition, is action of the court, of at the very least committing adultery show not only is he not the man on the court, but off it he is not even a man.

Head Starts Takes Step Back?

A review of the Government Accountability Office depicts head start as susceptible to waste and poor service because of weak federal oversight. As someone who has worked at a head start, a commercial preschool, and a non-profit preschool, I see a different problem in head start. While  head start needs to be run better financialy, that will not improve the children’s education substantially; nor will getting the teachers and child care providers better training and experience. These things would also help, but the key improving head start is the fact that children learn through play. Even playing with adults who are professionally trained in the ECE field can not fully substitute from playing with peers who come from different circumstances and different abilities. Children who attend head start, all come from similar socioeconomic background. Thus, when they play together they learn the same behavioral habits and speech patterns as the children they play with. When children play with other children who are less violent and have stronger vocabularies they themselves have become less violent with stronger vocabularies because they are forced to adapt. (I am not suggesting all children in head start are violent and have bad vocabularies; merely that issues like these are more prevalent in head start)  A voucher system to replace head start where the government pays for children to attend commercial or non profit nursery and preschools is a better option then head start. Anecdotally, I have seen children from abusive backgrounds thrive in programs where they are intergraded with more children who do not share their tough background.

Doesn’t Congress have more important things to worry about?

Many times recently while talking with people, listening to sports/political, reading message board and blogs I hear people ask about the steroids hearing “Doesn’t Congress have more important things to worry about like social security, war, budget ext?” Well it is true they do have  more important things to worry about; But, Congress is not very glamorous. Most of the time their votes are not about dramatic bills like social security, but on minute minutia like amending the digital media costumer’s rights act. ( I am not making that up. Go to congress.com and see all the other random bills.) While these bills are not fascinating or life altering, in their totality they are what shape the land. Just cause their are more important issues then steroids or digital media costumer’s rights does not mean that these issues should never be discussed.

Congress late to the Steroids Party

Tomorrow Congress will hold hearing on the issue of steroids abuse in baseball. My question what took them so long? In addition, why did the majority of fans only recently start caring and act shocked shocked like Claude Rains finding gambling at Ricks  that a lot of players were using steroids? One of my earlier sports memories is hearing the Fenway crowd taunt  Canseco and his bash brother McGuire with Steroids chants back in Tony Larussa's Oakland A’s days. Anyone who looked at film of 90s baseball players vs. their counterparts 15 years earlier knew that they were juicing: Lenny Dykstra, Brady Anderson, Ken Caminiti, McGuire, Canseco et al.

Less Ugly Americans

One of the reasons that the ugly Americans stereotype exists is that many Americans do not speak a second language well. Furthermore, more Americans speaking more languages will help diplomatic relations and even help fight terrorism. (CIA lacks a decent number of Arabic speaking agents.) There is a bill in the house to help alleviate this problem:

Bill Number: H.R. 115 National Security Language Act Sponsor: rep Rush Holt (D-NJ) Amends the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA) to establish programs to encourage early foreign language instruction, including grants to: (1) partnerships of institutions of higher education (IHEs) and local educational agencies (LEAs) for activities relating to foreign language instruction at elementary or secondary schools, with priorities for high-need LEAs and less-commonly taught foreign languages; and (2) IHEs that develop innovative programs for the teaching of foreign languages, with priorities for combining foreign languages with science and technology and for less-commonly taught foreign languages. Provides undergraduate student loan forgiveness of up to $10,000 for students who major in a critical foreign language and are employed as teachers of such language in elementary or secondary schools or as using such language regularly in a Federal agency. Directs the Secretary of Education to: (1) establish a foreign language education marketing campaign to encourage students at secondary schools and IHEs to study foreign languages, particularly ones less commonly taught and critical to national security; and (2) conduct a study to identify foreign language heritage communities and recruit speakers of such critical languages. Amends the David L. Boren National Security Education Act of 1991 to establish an International Flagship Language Initiative with grants to IHEs.

The Brackett Effect

Its NCAA tournament time again; what makes the tournament special is not the competition of amateur athletes, but the bracket. The quality of college basketball has declined over the years and like many in the Boston area I am a front runner in that I do not care too much unless BC is doing well like they have been this year. But, there is something special about the tournament bracket that always gets me excited. So many combinations of games, so many different outcomes, and a champion lay in that bracket. And everyone from Dick Vital to Suzie the secretary has a shot to predict it right.

Condi Not Convincing

Condi Rice’s denial of not having any presidential aspirations this morning was as convincing as Hilary Clinton’s. She would be a great Candidate for the Republicans in that she has a great back story, experience in international matters, no senate voting record to attack, religious convictions et al. Furthermore, her statement on abortion this morning (she is mildly pro-choice; ie does not personally support it or want government funds going into it, but thinks government should stay out of it and not make a law against it)  sounding like a statement from a political candidate to me.

Should Companies feel the need to give back to communities?

Here is an interesting article on the topic in from the Boston Herald:

Nestle chief rejects the need to `give back' to communities By Jennifer Heldt Powell Wednesday, March 9, 2005

Companies shouldn't feel obligated to ``give back'' to the community, because they haven't taken anything away, the Austrian-born chief of the world's largest food company told local executives yesterday. In a stunning broadside to corporate citizenship as Bostonians have come to know it, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe - head of Nestle S.A. - said companies should only pursue charitable endeavors with an underlying intention of making money for investors. ``I think there is good reason for corporate philanthropy,'' Brabeck-Letmathe said, speaking to Boston College's Chief Executives' Club. ``But as managers, we need to be very careful, because it is not our money we're handing out, but the money of shareholders.''

My Response:

Yes the companies do create jobs and products, and technically do not take anything away from a community, but companies are still obligated to give back. Any business does not exist in a vacuum; it is part of a community whether it is a local in addition to the global community. When communities do not flourish, the businesses in them also do not. Furthermore, a business should always do its best to be a good citizen just like people should do their best to be a solid citizen. If a person works, pays taxes, and does not try to hurt anyone they may be living up to their minimal societal obligations, but that does not mean they can’t and should not try to do more; Business are in the same boat.

But to complete the analogy just like I don’t expect a poor person to donate money before paying their rent I don’t expect business to lose money or not hire employees to engage in charitable endeavors. But, there is a solution to this conundrum. Not all charity involves donation of money; My proposal to community conscience CEO’s would be to require all employees from the lowest rung to the CEO’s themselves to commit to at least 2 hours of community service a month. Furthermore, it would help the company’s image and possibly its profitability if its workers were known as people who helped the community. People in that community would be more likely to patronize the Business.

What’s the going rate for a thigh wound?

With the Game/50 Cent beef officially resolved at a recent press conference, one wonders if the whole thing was manufactured to sell albums; Game is platinum and 50 cent sold over a million in 5 days. This leads me to wonder how much did the two rappers and their record execs pay the member of The Game’s crew in order to take a bullet in the thigh all in the name of publicity during their crew confrontation on radio station Hot 97.7?

Orwellian Clean Skies Act

Good news on the environment front; The Orwellian named clear skies act has got bogged down in committee after republican James M Inhofe (OK) joined democrat and independent opposition to the bill. The act would give power companies more leeway when they upgrade their power plants; they would not have to concurrently reduce admissions with the upgrades which the current clear air act stipulates.

Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act

Bill # H.R.1731 Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act - Amends the Federal criminal code to establish penalties for aggravated identity theft.
Prescribes sentences of two years' imprisonment for knowingly transferring, possessing, or using, without lawful authority, a means of identification of another person during and in relation to specified felony violations (including felonies relating to theft from employee benefit plans and various fraud and immigration offenses), and five years' imprisonment for knowingly taking such action during and in relation to specified felony violations pertaining to terrorist acts, in addition to the punishments provided for such felonies.

Identity theft is a becoming a national trend and can ruin unsuspecting hard working people’s lives. Tougher sentences are needed. Call your senators to supports this bill: John Kerry (617) 565-8519. Edward M. Kennedy  (617) 565-3170

Gore Gone is Good

Chris Mathews is reporting that Al Gore will not seek the presidential nomination in 08. This is good news for the democrats; the last thing they need is a cluttered 08 field. Their should only be a few legitimate contenders: Bill Richardson, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Evan Bayh.

Supreme Court won’t touch fake cock

The Supreme Court refused to hear the case Williams vs. Alabama, 04-849 thus letting the lower court ruling stand that Alabama has the right to police the sale of sexually stimulating devises. While this law will probably provide jokes for late night comedians, this is a serious violation of civil liberties.  The law does not outlaw the use of devises; it does outlaw their sale in Alabama. There is an old political joke that no one wants a democrat in the boardroom or a republican in the bedroom. Well the conservative court is violating that adage in sexist way. Why are sex toys being outlawed, but virility drugs are still sold? Both products intended result is orgasm. The obvious answer is sexism and homophobia because the stereotype is that these devises are used by women, homosexuals and of course Bill O’reilly. The court used the slippery slop argument that over turning the law may lead to other mores becoming legal such as adult insist and prostitution. In this case the slippery slope argument does not hold water; there is place to draw the line when it comes to sex acts and there is no reason why we can’t outlaw incest, but allow the sale of sex toys to be used by consenting adults.

Blair Blasts Bitches

Tony Blair made a speech were he called for a real debate about risk and for people to stop panicking about everything from the possibility of mobile phones giving you cancer, food safety, children playing on wet playgrounds et al. He went on to say that there is literally hundreds and million of dollars wasted on government programs and litigation that involve small risks such as the aforementioned ones. (news.scotsman.com)While Blair was making this comment about the UK it can also apply to many aspects of American life. There are many people in the States who become paranoid because the media making a small issue seam gigantic. To great examples are the West Nile Virus and kidnapping. The vast majority of people who contract the West Nile Virus have little of no ill effects. The only people who ever die from it are elderly. While no one wants an elderly loved one to die, many common dieses result in the elderly people’s death; there is no reason West Nile should lead the news every night in the summer. Then we have kidnappings; an extremely unlikely occurrence that has caused parents to be so overprotective that children are not even allowed to go out and play by themselves any more. Despite the constant media reports on kidnapping across the country, the numbers have steadily fallen over the years. While you can child proof your house, you can’t child proof the world. Unless you want you and your children to become a Howard Hughes like hermit, you must venture out of you secured antiseptic rooms and enter the big wide world.

White Collar Justice

A recent Government Accountability Office study found on average only 7% of government ordered restitutions to be paid by executives and business owners to investors and shareholders are ever paid! Many times the business owners get out it by scams such as Transferring hundreds of thousands of dollars to a trust for a minor child, which the criminal effectively controlled. This is a disgrace; to put it on a micro level imagine if a person was saving money for retirement under a mattress and someone broke into the house and stole the money. The thief would most likely be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The Attorneys General’s financial litigation units have been extremely lax over the past few years. Being tough on crime doesn't mean very much if we aren't serious about enforcing court-ordered fines and restitution," said Sen. Byron Dorgan D-N.D. Call or email your local congressmen to ask them to investigate this matter further. Representative Ed Markey 781 396-2900

If Senators Kerry or Kennedy ever decide to leave office, a good replacement was at the Whitehouse yesterday; Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein who was there with the World Champion Red Sox delegation. Epstein, has campaigned for democrats in the past, is a Yale graduate, handsome, and competition with Tom Brady for most beloved person in Massachusetts.

How do the democrats regain power?

The democrats currently appear to be a beaten party. How can they regain power and influence? The answers are building up from the bottom, learn from republicans, and come up with some new ideas. In 1980 and 1994 the Republicans had two successful elections because they had new ideas and they marketed them with shrewed tactics like the Capital Steps event in 1980 and the Contract with America in 1994. Everyone including myself is too focused on 08, but the democrats need to focus on 06 house election.  If, all they focus on is hating bush again and criticizing him again they will not make any gains. They need to have substantive new ideas and promote them in innovative ways such as the republicans publishing the contract in magazines like TV guide and readers digest. The issue that the democrats need to reclaim in 06 and come up with a new idea for is social security. While not a new idea, the democrats should push Senator D. Robert Kerry’s kidsave program where each child is given a $2,000 dollar loan from social security at birth; this will have a greater rate of return then the current system; this should be done in conjunction with increasing  the payroll tax cap to $250,000. This plain would be a lot more popular then Bushes, be based on democratic principals, and could be used if promoted correctly as a issue to gain seats in the house and senate.

 Lets get it started

I am sick of the United States going to war against little backward countries. (It is like USC facing Southern Connecticut State in football) What we need now is a war against more equally matched countries. There are far too many people on earth and this would be a great way to thin out the population and provide some entertainment. Here would be some pretty good match ups to start off with: Australia vs. Canada, Egypt vs. Greece, India vs. France, Iran vs. N. Korea, Cuba vs. Liberia, Mexico vs. Wal-Mart. Main event tag team USA and UK vs. China and reunited USSR.

ABC self censors Oscars

A bit by Robin Williams was pulled by the Oscars; the song mocked the group focus on the family’s contention that Sponge Bob was promoting a gay agenda.

"Pinocchio's had his nose done! Sleeping Beauty is popping pills!
"The Three Little Pigs ain't kosher! Betty Boop works
Beverly Hills!"
"Fred Flintstone is dyslexic, Jessica Rabbit is really a man, Olive Oyl is really anorexic, and
Casper is in the Ku Klux Klan!"

If this was too wild for the network I have a bad feeling about Rock’s opening monologue. I just hope he is not reduced to Uma meet Opera.

Elite media, SUV, and an assassination plot

Recently a man who planned to assassinate President Bush named Ahmed Omar Abu Ali was arrested. He was most likely not a real threat and there is a side bar to the story that he claims to have been tortured by the Saudi’s while in prison.  But, there are two aspects of the story that I find interesting. Any news story regarding the arrest mentions that Ali, was Valedictorian of his Virginian high school. What nearly all those stories in the mainstream press fail to mention for reasons that my guess are for political correctness is that school he was valedictorian of is Islamic Saudi Academy. A school funded by the Saudi’s that teacher’s radical Wahabi form of Islam. Why this was not mentioned in any of the big media newspaper stories and broadcast reports if not for political correctness?  (Do a search, it is hardly ever mentioned what school he was valedictorian of)

The extreme form of Wahabi Islam  is the doctrine of most terrorist is mostly funded by rich Saudis. Now where on earth would rich Saudi’s get their money from? Sometimes in wars nations have to sacrifice.  The United States needs to make energy independence a number one priority so we are not funding those who want to hate us. How do we become energy independent? Higher fuel standards on cars, wind farms in places like off the coast of cape cod, more nuclear plants, all new houses designed to take advantage of as much solar energy as possible, invest more in fuel cells and hybrid  cars and give tax breaks to those who buy and produce them, drill for oil in Alaska et al. It can be done if we make a national commitment to it the same way Kennedy to putting a man on the moon.

The Empire strikes back

Russia is set to sign an agreement with Iran this week that will help build Iran’s first nuclear reactor. While there are safeguards in the agreement in order to prevent Iran from using the reactor to create nuclear weapons and Tehran comically states that is needs the reactor to produce electricity as they float on oil, anyone with their head on straight does not want the Mullahs in Iran with easy access to Nuclear material.  In addition, Russia also recently signed agreements with China to conduct joint military exercises with China and to continue supply China with weapons. Both these ventures have two major things in common: Add in Russia’s prying into the Ukrainian election and the government taking control of the media, and you got a mix of a Russia that appears to be sliding a way from democracy challenging America’s global supremacy.

What should the United States do about this? Don’t overreact; while the Iran and China situations are extremely troubling, they both also serve the economic interest of Russia by creating markets for their technologies. The United States has been in bed with crazy and evil men and will have too done it again in the future occasionally for its own interests. (We’ve been on the same side as Stalin, Bin Laden, Hussein et al.) Russia should be given a chance to find its own way, but the US should insist strict oversight of the Iranian plant. I believe Russia will do a solid job off overseeing the plant cause of self preservation. Russia knows that if it appeared that Iran developed and god forbid used a nuclear weapon from that plant they would be guilty by association; thus leading to cold war high like hostilities between he two giant nations witch no one with a right mind would want. I hope, pray, and believe that Russia is not out of its mind and will not partake in actions that will lead to a cold or hot war involving it and the United States.

 Walker Traded back to Celtics

While Walker was always a polarizing figure on the Celtics, I was always a fan of him and am glad he is back in town. Walker’s game has never been smooth. He relies on half hooks and three against better defenders quick drives to the basket against bigger slower power forwards. But he provides intensity and leader ship that the Celtics do not have right now. Pierce is not and will never have the make up of a leader. Furthermore, if the he is a free agent at the end of the year and we will get cap relief when his contract expires.

Bicycling funds are in danger--please take action today and call Governor Romney.
BRIEF BACKGROUND

on January 25th, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued a notice to all states requiring them to give back a portion of their previously promised transportation funds. Massachusetts is responsible for returning over $24 million in transportation funds, leaving the state's Transportation Enhancement Program --the largest federal investment in rail-trails, walking and bicycling in American communities-- vulnerable to sweeping, disproportionate cuts. Governor Romney and MassHighway must decide by
Thursday, February 24 where
Massachusetts' portion of the funds returned will come from.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Call or email Governor Romney's office today by
5pm.
Governor Mitt Romney's phone number is 617-725-4005. His fax is 617-727-9725.
Ask…
1) To keep Transportation Enhancements, Recreational Trails, and Bicycle/Pedestrian Programs strongly and equitably funded with federal transportation funds, even with the federal rescission 2) Transportation Enhancements only makes up 2.8% of MA transportation dollars, so it should ONLY receive 2.8% of the cuts.

Tis better to speak up, then to shut someone else up

Recently, Harvard University President Lawrence Summers, made a comment that suggested that maybe the lack of women in the Science and Math fields has to do with genetic differences. Soon after the comments, he was criticized by those who disagreed with him as being some sort of sexist Neanderthal. Here is a little piece of advice for the supposed open minded people who came to convulsions after Summers’ comments, prove him wrong or at least state you case. We have come to a point in this country where when someone says something that appears to be insensitive or offends our sensibilities we want to shut them up or remove them from their position to make their opinions heard. Call me old fashion, but the best reaction to someone saying a position you do not agree with is not to silence them, but to engage them in dialogue, debate them, and prove them wrong with facts that back up your claims. Silencing them just closes the debate and ends in no voices being heard instead of all. This applies to Ward Churchill, Michael Savage, or any other person who has an extreme opinion.

 Hilary Clinton’s Balance

Hilary Clinton showed yesterday skills that set her apart from her fellow democrats. Clinton while in Iraq said the insurgence was failing and talked about the positive signs like many parts of Iraq being secure. But, she also continues to point out mistakes in planning and diplomacy that Bush is making. But her critiques come with more heft, because unlike Dean, Kerry, Edwards, Sharpton, et al… she is not scared to point out positive aspects of the situation. In the end, Clinton’s political acumen will ensure fewer damaging sound bites compared to her democratic colleagues when her inevitable presidential run takes place.

 Skinner’s Squad Skins Orange

While I was skeptical of the BC Eagle’s gaudy record because of their lack of quality opponents outside of UConn, yesterdays win over Syracuse made me a believer. Watson, Dudley, and Smith personify toughness. Furthermore, yesterday was yet another example that there a solid rebounding team which is a great assist in the tournament. Al Skinner is the hands down coach of the year.

Blood for oil:Let me be the first to propose the Blood for Oil Program; donate a pint of blood and then receive a free gallon of oil

Frozen: It looks as though the NHL season of 04/05 has been pretty much been put on ice. The NHL already had a low fan base and this lockout may be a Bob Probert knock out blow to the league. If a new league is an established here are a few things that it should incorporate:

  1. No teams in places were Ice never occurs naturally. (A team in Tampa won the Stanley cup last year that is disgusting)
  2. Make the goalie pads smaller. Scoring has decreased and part of the reasons giant goalies are wearing giant pads, that do much more then protect their bodies from injury they make it nearly impossible to find openings.
  3. Have about no more then 16 teams with in four, four team divisions.
  4. Top 2 teams in each division make playoffs.
  5. Get new refs and train them to call penalties consistently
  6.   Have a salary cap, where if a team passes it they forfeit their first round draft pick and have it replaced with a seventh rounder

Stop Government Propaganda Act

Recently, it was uncovered that columnist Armstrong Williams and Maggie Gallagher were paid substantial sums of money by the Departments of Education and the Departments of Health and Human Services in order to promote those departments programs in their columns and radio talk shows. While they were both technically not “journalist” in the traditional sense, it is bad for democracy and unethical when those with powerful media voices are being paid directly by the government in order to promote government programs and agendas. In response to this “-- Sens. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Frank R. Lautenberg (D-N.J.) will introduce a bill, The Stop Government Propaganda Act, in the Senate next week. The Stop Government Propaganda Act states, "Funds appropriated to an Executive branch agency may not be used for publicity or propaganda purposes within the United States unless authorized by law." I urge everyone to call, email, or write their representatives in congress in order to support this law and stop this perversion of democracy being committed.

Make all marriages civil unions

There is a simple solution to the issue of gay marriage that I have yet to here anyone propose. Make all marriages civil unions. Being someone with libertarian ideals, I know that the government has no business in what goes on in someone’s bedroom. On the other hand a pragmatic look at history shows that a society thrives when people are in stable relationships so they should be encouraged. Thus people would have the opportunity to enter into a civil union with a partner in order to get visitation rights, tax breaks, and inheritance rights ext…How people choose to enter in to these unions at city hall, cruise ship or church would be there decision. What also would be there decision is what to call the union: Marriage, life partners, going steady ext. Churches would also have the right not to perform or recognize unions that they do not see fit whether it be because the people are the same sex or of different ethnicities or religions. This is the best solution in term of everyone having equal rights under the law and allowing private institutions like churches to set their own parameters.

If any one thinks that this proposal diminish the importance of marriage consider this: If you were married and made a personal commitment to someone and suddenly the government collapsed and all government contract including your marriage were null and void would you still be married to your wife, husband, partner? Of course you would. If you make a commitment to a person whether it be a one between you and that person or a commitment between two people under god the government cannot take that away from you.
