Perkins School For the Blind Hosts Track and Field Meet

Perkins is one of  Watertown’s landmarks ( and has employed some of my family). Tomorrow the school is hosting a great event.

Perkins School for the Blind is hosting this year’s Eastern Athletic Association for the Blind’s (EAAB) Track and Field Meet. Almost 100 blind and visually impaired teenage athletes from schools throughout the east coast will compete. Schools from as far away as West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New York will participate. We expect a large group of spectators, including Perkins staff and volunteers. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the EAAB.

Many of the athletes have disabilities in addition to being blind. Some will compete in wheelchairs or with walkers. Perkins has an outdoor track with guide wires for runners who are blind. There are a number of challenges, including consecutive and triple jumps, 50 and 75 yard dash, softball throw, football throw and the 220, 440 and 880 yard runs.

Track meet participants head home Sunday morning, May 21st.

The public is invited to observe the event starting Saturday May 20th at 8 AM.

I will give a recap of the event tomorrow night.
