God Save The Internet

The fight for net neutrality now has its anthem. Boston Legend Kay Hanley, along with Michelle Lewis and Jill Sobule have joined forces to create the group The Broadband (You have to love the pun) and record the song “God Save The Internet” which is a call to arms to save net neutrality. The song is brilliantly witty/silly. Go here to download the song.
The gist of the issue is whether or not the big Telecom companies like Verizon and AT&T can give preferential treatment to websites that pay them money. For example let’s say website X pays money to Verizon. Verizon would then make Website X’s content load quickly on your computer. Conversely website Y and Z who did not pay Verizon money would have their content loud slower. In extreme cases website Y and Z could be blocked completely. This would adversely affect bloggers like myself and pretty much any of the millions of website who could not afford to buy access. Since sights that did not pay would be harder to find and load, people would most likely go to the faster websites that paid for access thus driving traffic away from the millions of voices trying to share their opinion, get their music heard, show off their video et al.
