Hips Do Lie

Hips Don’t Lie is a top 10 song by Shakira and Wyclef. What you may not know is that the song was originally called Dance Like That and was a song performed by Wyclef and Claudette Ortiz from the group City High for the Dirty Dancing Havana Nights soundtrack. Both songs have the same beat and nearly the same lyrics. The only difference is that in the Hips Don’t Lie version Wyclef says “Shakira Shakira” instead of “mi casa su casi” in the original. The other change is instead of Wyclef saying “let me see you dance like you come from Havana” in the original version he changes it to “let me see you dance like you come from Columbia.” ( Shakira is from Columbia) It goes to show that what makes a hit song is not the quality of the song or how catchy it is, but the marketing behind it and the name recognition of the artist performing it.

I wish that this phenomenon was exclusive to music, but in politics a famous last name will get you far. Would the current Bush in the white house ever have stood a shot to become president without his president father? Would Hilary Clinton be a front runner for the democratic nomination if she never married Bill? Hell, before he died people always talked about JFK jr. as a possible presidential candidate for the future despite the fact that he had zero qualifications for it.
