No Signature Required

I have noticed that at CVS and a few other stores of late after you make a credit card purchase you are not required to sign your signature on the receipt or even a the touch pad thing. How did this come to be? I ask the person at the counter about the change, but they did not really know why it occurred. I know that the store clerks barely check to see if the signatures actual match, but no signature at all seems to lead to a lot of problems. What if you want to dispute a charge that you did not make? Without a signature how would you prove that you where the one who did or did not make the purchase?
