The FCC vs. Pro Sports
Watch out Trot Nixon, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, drunken guy in the crowd ext… the FCC may want to wash out your mouth with soap; The FCC has recently announced that it will be reviewing tapes of sports broadcast to check if any Vulgar words spoken by players, coaches, or fans were allowed on air with the possibility of sanctions and fines against the networks. Let me be the first to say that this is completely fucked up bullshit. There is already a few second delay between when something happens on the field and when it reaches T.V., but this type of sanctions could increase that delay even more as broadcasters try not to let any comment that could be considered obscene on air. Does anyone actual think hearing the occasional barely audible curse word from a ballplayer will really harm a child in any way. I wonder if the FCC will be looking for English vulgarities only or will they include the Spanish swears that Manny Ramirez screams when ever he fouls off a pitch he should have nailed? What should the network due if the entire crowd starts chanting Bulllllshittt after a bad call? Just completely cut off all audio? What about the constant Yankees Suck chants? Will they pass the FCC’s muster? How about Batter constantly… how should I put this… “Adjusting themselves?”
This leads me to the theory that all pro sports will eventually be broadcast on HBO or Showtime. They could have microphones all over the field to pick up every vulgarity and broadcast any trash talking going on. If we had that at the World Cup, then everyone could have heard what set that Zidane guy off. It also could lead to a lot more interesting play by play and color annalist conversations. Here is an example of what I mean:
Jerry Remy: “Don, is it just me or does Derek Lowe look drunk off his Ass?”
Don Orsillo: “His eyes do look a little fucked up Jerry, but he may just be squinting trying to stare at the tits of that
Jerry: “that reminds me Don of when I was playing for the sox and Jon Tudor got a blow job from the Cracker Jack girl after the fourth inning of a complete game shut out in 81.Good Times Don, Good Times.”
Don: I guess Tudor’s ERA was not the only thing that went down that night Jerry
