Any one else notice the huge poster for Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto in Coolidge Square? I always find it interesting to look at what’s on billboards because it shows how marketing people perceive an area. Gibson’s last movie, The Passion, was barely marketed in these parts. Now after his drunken anti-Semitic tirade, it seems that his marketing people have decided to promote Apocalypto in one of the bluest of the blue areas like Coolidge Corner which is only a hop and a skip away from one of conservative pundit’s favorite targets Harvard. I am guessing this is the case for 2 reasons: first, from what I have read, the movie may have an anti Iraq war subtext which the marketing people probably think would play well in these parts. Second, the perception that the area is liberal and open minded and would thus be more inclined to give Mel Gibson another chance after his recent scandals.
