I was recently listening to Jay Z’s The Dynasty Roc La Familia album which is pretty hit and miss album throughout, but contains a few diamonds ( pun intended) in the rough: I just wanna Love you, This Can’t be life and the classic Soon You’ll Understand. Something  that always fascinated me about Soon You’ll Understand is how thematically and structurally similar it is lyrically to Fiona Apple’s classic track Fast As You Can from When The Pawn…Both songs are about someone trying to convince their significant other to leave their relationship because Apple and Jay Z respectively are self destructive. It is something that you would not hear in a conventional pop song and a topic that only songwriters as gifted as Apple and Carter could tackle effectively.
