Requiem To A Dream Machine

A few weeks back while doing some holiday shopping in the Arsenal Mall, I noticed a few video games placed in the food-court across from Foot Locker. Those video games are the last remaining ruins of a once great place known as The Dream Machine. The Dream Machine was an Arcade in the Watertown Mall for many years before being moved to the Arsenal Mall for its final years. The move to the Arsenal Mall was similar to a once top rated T.V. show being moved from a primetime Thursday slot to a Saturday night position the year before it gets canceled. What led to The Dream Machine’s demise was the rise of more advanced home video game systems. However, there was a time from the mid 80s to the mid 90s when The Dream Machine was the reason to go to the Watertown Mall. (Well if you were between the ages of 2-15 it was).
I first started going around the age of 2 or 3 back in 85 or 86. Back then The Dream Machine had 2 levels with mostly racing games and Skee Ball on the lower part and games like Pac Man and Centipede in the upper part that could only be reached going up a ramp. When I was really young, I used to go with my older brother or sister while my mom would be shopping at Stop & Shop. (Which resided at the current location of Best Buy) My brother would mostly play the racing game Outrun, the racing/action game Spy Hunter, and Centipede. My sister was more into Ms. Pac Man. I would either watch them play or play Skee Ball where I could accumulate those yellow tickets. The tickets could be used to redeem prizes; usually I got one of those little green army men which they don’t make anymore and the biggest prize I ever got was this model car that was also an AM radio.
About age 7, I started to go to The Dream Machine more with some of my friends and that’s when I got hooked on the video game version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I can probably not tell you a single activity I did during my time at Ms. Smart’s Second Grade class at the Hosmer School, but till this day I could tell you the level design and how to beat each boss in that Ninja Turtle game. My favorite move was you were fighting both Bee Bop and RockSteady at the same time and they would both run after you. You would jump at a precise moment and then the 2 bad guys would crash into each other.
At age 7-9 The games that occupied my most time were Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat (to a much lesser extent then Street Fighter) , and NBA Jam. Around that time I got my first home video game system the Sega Genesis. At home I would practice my Street Fighter moves, then head to the arcade to wail with a series of Hadoukens on usually older gamers. Because of NBA Jam, a silly 2-2 NBA basketball game one of my most used phrased during that age was BoomShakalaka!!!
Age 10+ I was more into racing games. My favorite had to be Cruisin USA. Cruisin USA was a racing game with courses that all resembled major cities across the United States. You raced against 10 other cars, but 4 of the cars where other human competitors in the arcade. One of the best features of the game was that whoever won first place got to race the next game for free. At an age 11 quarters were hard earned by either doing some crappy yard work job, shoveling, dog walking, begging parents, or looking in couch cushions so the free game was a huge deal. One time a friend of mine got first place in the game when he realized that he left a bag of clothes that he had just bought at the Friendly’s across the entire parking lot. In order for him to not lose his free game, I bit the bullet and ran across the parking lot to retrieve his clothes from the Friendly’s. After running back to the Dream Machine though, I preceded to win the next game earning bragging rights away from my friend and the coveted free game. Since it was multiplayer, the biggest satisfaction in the game was beating a friend. However, occasional their was some random A-hole playing and the goal was for anyone of your friends to beat the A-hole even if it was not you. The last cool feature of the game was that if you won the final race across the country which was in Los Angeles, you got a congratulations screen that featured none other then a digital President Bill Clinton sitting in a hot tub surrounded by bikini clad girls. (ah the 90s, a simpler age).
By the time I hit my mid-teens I had stopped going to The Dream Machine as much. There was alternative music to listen to while contemplating the hypocrisy of the world and girls to be pined over. In addition, there were more advanced home video game systems that made it easier to get a quality video game fix. Since, I am not a big shopper and did not go to the malls that much, it barley registered when The Dream Machine moved from the Watertown Mall and its eventual demise. But, it is still integral to my memories growing up in the area.
I believe it can be again to a new generation of youngsters. Currently the space once occupied in by the Dream Machine in the Watertown Mall is empty and has mostly scene short lived gibberish stores. Here should be the economic model to bring the Dream Machine back. The place should be split in half; half of it should be devoted to fun simple games for children 7 and below like the aforementioned Skee Ball were tickets can be won. The other half should consist of some tradition sit down style arcade racing games, but it should also have a bunch of actual video games systems such as PS3 and X-Box 360 in lieu of the tradition arcade machines. Instead of the tradition quarters for play system, the actual video game systems should be accessed by paying a flat fee for an hour of play. In addition to that, they should hold tournaments of popular video games especially Madden where players would pay to enter and pay to watch. Many bars and restaurants such as Game On hold similar tournaments. In the end, what will attract more people to the Watertown Mall, a revamped and re-launched Dream Machine or one of those half assed stores that have occupied its space since?

Ahhh, those were the days. I started hanging out in MY Dream Machine Family action Arcade back in the 70's. I was maybe 6. The mall was only a 10 or 15 minute walk from my house, and kids could walk and visit places like malls by themselves back then. When I got older, I worked at the DM in the early 90's, We had the T.M.N.T. game, a popular one at the birthday parties that we held on the weekends ...(all the free games you could play in an hour). I'm sure you were just like all the other hundreds of 8 year old boys shouting and screaming and beating the buttons of that game ... I always enjoyed the birthday parties the most, they made me feel nostalgic then, and little did I know I was watching the end of an arcade era. My DM closed in the mid-90's maybe 96. This small mall, the first mall north of Boston, is still open, but lifeless. No longer the place to hand out, it is filled with craft stores and crap like that. People say that what killed this mall was the closing of the big department stores (freezes and Riches, later Ames) but I say it was the close of a dream. I still faithfully drive 30 miles to shop in this small mall once a year at Christmas time, a personal token of happy memories. The games I play on my home PC and game systems are so much better quality than the ones of the arcades ... but for some reason, no where near the fun. It was a thrill sitting down in Race Drive'n and feeling the car around you, or spy hunter. It was neat holding the gun of Space Gun or the bow for Cross Bow. I always loved the pin-balls, especially Adams Family and the one that played the zz-top tune La Grange (think it was hard drive'n) You just can’t re-create the feel of a real pin-ball game on a console or PC. I wonder what my baby boy will think of the notion of an arcade, and just how big a deal they were to us ... I hope they do have some kind of resurgence in some limited fashion, they were just cool.
Your re-vamp idea: Someone actually did this in my mall. It was bigger, and they called it "Blast from the Past" it lasted a couple of years. It was always filled with freaky old dudes (me) and I can see why it never took off. its a tough sell. I'd love to know if this business model has ever worked elsewhere, but I'm guessing no. If there were money in arcades and drive-ins .. they'd still be here! the truth hurts, but I think that sums it up.

Teddy's only serious misdemeanour this year occurred when he was out in the field. The kick that he delivered there to Chesterfield, Tait's partner in the Olympic team event, will prevent the horse from competing at Badminton in May. Ready Teddy will therefore go to the great event in Gloucestershire with a different stable companion, Aspyring.

I certainly don't mean to make light of your situation. In fact, I know exactly how you feel. I failed so miserably my first time in business that I swore I would never think about working for myself again. All I wanted to do was to find a nice, secure 9-to-5 job that provided me with a nice steady paycheck. I yearned for the opportunity to grow fat and happy on someone else's payroll for a change.
I never again wanted to have to think about customers or employees or withholding taxes or accounts receivable or anything else even remotely associated with being in business.
I just wanted to crawl in a hole and die because my business had failed, and in my All-American, macho male, "you are what you do" brain that meant that I was a failure, too.
Getting over the failure of a business can be extremely difficult, especially if you are one of those entrepreneurs (like I was) who wrongly relates the success or failure of a business to the success or failure of you as a person.
