New York Hip Hop’s Problem
Many people have speculated why NY hip hop has lost its prominence commercially and even creatively to the South. While I enjoy a good hip hop beef as much as the next guy, NY has got to the point where it seems to successful artist and or producers can’t collaborate any more. The most recent example is the pretty silly beef between Dip Set and G Unit. The actual diss tracks from both sides are mediocre and more importantly it makes it impossible for any 2 artist from each side to collaborate on a track together to make a commercial hit or something creative artistically. In the past, NY could have an album like No Way Out that featured Biggie, Jay Z, Foxy, Lil Kim, The Lox, Busta, and more. I don’t think that there will be any album with such a variety of NY artist on it in the near future. NY other big issue is that they need some new producing talent that goes with the NY’s style MC’s.
