An Old School Classic Moment Even Without The No-Hitter

It was a scene that could have been from 90 years ago; I work as a Pre-K teacher and tonight I was working until 6pm. The children where playing outside on the playground and on the radio was the Red Sox game and Schilling had a no-hitter going into the 9th. As the fathers were arriving to pick up their children, they called their sons and daughters over to sit with them next to the radio and listen to the 9th inning. The children who are only 4-5 are too young to comprehend the moment, but still this had the potential to be one of those “where were you when…” moments that people talk about. With each out the tension and excitement grew. But alas, it was not meant to be. Shannon Stewart lined a Schilling fastball into right field for the first and only hit of the game. However, even without the no-hitter, the moment was still a testament of the power of baseball to bring people together across generations, class, and cultures.
