I Don’t Get Slot Machines
I recently went to Foxwoods. (A.K.A. a glorified shopping mall with some gambling) I understand the general appeal of table games such as poker, black jack, and roulette. (The latter being where I wasted most of my money) Though most of those games are 99 percent luck, you can at least try some sort of strategy; In addition, you can pretend like you are being all cool like some sort of James Bond movie or something. (o.k. maybe that is just me and my lame us who pretends he is James Bond) Before we left Foxwoods, we went to find my aunt who was staying their longer. She was at the slot machines and as I watched her play, and even played one myself for a few minutes I for the life of me could not determine their appeal. This is in no way meant to besmirch my aunt because lord knows she was just one of thousands sitting there putting their money into the machines, only to quickly lose it. The sheer number of people I saw playing slot machines mean they must have some sort of interesting aspect to them, but what it is I still don’t know. My biggest complaint when it comes to slot machines is how quick they are and because you can’t even fool yourself into having a strategy because it is completely based on chance. In addition, all you get to do while playing is either pull a lever or hit a button. I wasted countless quarters in my youth at arcades, but at least there you get the satisfaction of playing the game even if the only thing you can really win is those yellow arcade tickets. Thus, give me Skee ball and those yellow tickets over Slot Machines and the prospect of winning real money any day of the week. That being said, . I hope they allow Slots at Suffolk Downs eventually because they are a cash cow and the “social costs” can’t be that much worse then the lottery.
