What 4/5 Year Olds Can Teach Us About The Democratic Primary
In the Pre-k class I teach, one of the themes for the month has been voting and elections. In order to avoid annoying any of the parents I hold mostly silly elections with the children instead of voting for any actual political stuff. One of the things the children voted on was their favorite superhero. The nominees where Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and Kim Possible. When all the ballots where counted Kim Possible won in a landslide. It is pretty easy to figure out why; most if not all the girls voted for Kim Possible while the other 3 superheros split the boy vote. Now lets say we got rid of 2 of the male superheros on the ballot and had one (Spiderman was in 2nd place) face off against Kim Possible one on one. The vote still might split on mostly gender lines, but now Spidey would have a shot depending on how many girl or boys where present/absent from class that day. The Superhero election mirrors the current democratic primary where Kim Possible is Clinton, Spiderman is Obama, Batman is Edwards, and Superman is Bill Richardson. While I don't think all women will vote for Hillary, I am willing to bet she will get the majority of the female vote. While Spiderman Obama is her most likely challenger, Batman Edwards will siphon off some of the male union vote and Superman Richardson will take some of the male Hispanic vote. Thus a higher percentage of women will vote for Hillary then men voting for Obama. This will essentially hand Hillary the nomination. What Spiderman Obama needs is for Edwards and Richardson to drop out of the race early (like after Iowa and New Hampshire) in order to make it a one on one battle between Hillary (Kim Possible) Clinton and Barack (Spiderman) Obama. I think Obama can buy off Edwards with a promise to make him part of his administration if he agrees to drop out early. However, Richardson is angeling for a job (possibly Vice President) in the Clinton administration and will thus stay in the race longer in order to appease Hillary. In the end, I still think it is going to be Kim Possible Clinton vs. Mitt (Ken Doll) Romney.
