The Florida Marlins; Major League Farm Team

With last week's trade, The Marlins payroll is about 15 million; The Marlins recieve about 30 million in revenue sharing. While the Marlins acrue other expenses aside from player salary, they also generate some revenue via ticket sales and advertising. With those facts, it is pretty safe to say that the Marlins will make about a 15 million dollar profit this year. Major markey teams like Boston and New York pay the most in revenue sharing. Because of this, one can say that in essence major market teams are subsidizing the Marlins existence. Thus, the Marlins have become a major league farm team for the big market teams. The major markey teams send their best prospects there (Hanley Ramirez) and then call up Marlins players like Beckett, Cabrera, and Willis to the big leagues.
