The Celtics Sociological Problem
Right now, the Celtics problem is a sociological one. In basketball, you need a player to be your alpha dog and take control of the game sometimes and then have everyone else feed off of that. For the C's in the 80s the Alpha dog was obviously Bird. In the late 90s and early part of this decade, Pierce and Walker did a really good job of trading the role back in fourth. Sometimes Walker would take the lead and Pierce would take the back seat and vice versa. Watching the team right now, it seems no one wants to be that guy. The Celtics had a 10 point lead going into the 4th and then blew the game during an offensive stretch when they went 1-10 from the floor. During that terrible stretch, it seemed no one wanted to be the man for the Celtics. KG of all people looked tentative at times and because of that his shot was not going in. Pierce did not seem very confident. Allen was sticking to his role which was pretty successful for most of the night which was being the extra option after Rondo or Pierce drove to the basket. While the Celtics had no one who seemed to want to be the man, former Celtic Joe Johnson stepped up and became the man for the Hawks with an 18 points in the 4th quarter performance that reminded me a lot of Pierce performance in the 4th quarter in Game 3 vs. the Nets in 2002. Despite, KG's dominant personality, I think it is going to have to be Pierce again who takes control of this series and becomes the man for the Celtics.
