V.P. Choice Big Deal In 08
While in the past I think V.P. choices are overrated, I think this is going to be one of the times when they are going to be a real factor in the race.
Obama have a couple of main flaws. One he is obviously inexperienced on the National Stage. 2, his long battle with Clinton along with the crazy comments by his now former Pastor and that other crazy Catholic guy have alienated some of The Democrats white working class base.
McCain’s issue is the opposite of Obama’s inexperienced. His age with be a factor for superficial and non-superficial reasons. I watched his speech last night and others in the past, and he just does not look vibrant up there. In addition, he has these weird ticks where he smiles at wrong times during the speech and it seems kinda weird. On the non-superficial side his VP choice will matter more because there is a higher possibility of health problems cropping up because of his age and past history that might force the VP to have to take over. Furthermore, if he wins, there is a good chance that he might not run for a second term and thus his VP would be the GOP nominee next time.
McCain’s other big issue is that he is going to be attacked from all sides. To his right, many conservatives in his base still can’t stand him because of things like the McCain-Feingold Bill or the McCain-Kennedy Immigration bill that did not get passed. To his left, Obama can go at him as going from being a “Maverick” to voting with Bush’s policy over 90% of the time, flip flopping on the Bush’s tax cuts, and wanting to keep us in the quagmire that is Iraq even longer.
Therefore, until we find out who Obama and McCain’s VP choices are, any predictions on who will win are foolhardy.
