Lil Wayne Takes A Victory Lap

He did it! Lil Wayne sold over 1 million copies of THA Carter 3 in one week doubling the first week sales totals of more established acts like Usher and Mariah Carey. What is even more important is how he did it; while music labels have been consistently behind the times with new technology the past 10 years and have an idiotic antagonistic relationship where the sue some of their best fans because of it, Wayne by himself took the opposite approach. He went into the studio and just started recorded and releasing classic shit onto mixtapes and the internets for free. In a recent Rolling Stone Article Sylvia Rhone, president of Universal Motown admitted that Wayne's mixtape strategy "really goes counter to what we would like our artists to do." I hope record labels wake up after Lil Wayne's historic week and start engaging in more fan friendly practices like Lil Wayne, Radiohead, and Nine Inch Nails. One more strategy that people should follow that Lil Wayne just did; here is a marketing idea, make a classic album, and people will buy it. Congratulations to Lil Wayne who lived up to his own "best rapper alive" hype and gave a template for future rappers and artists in general to go on. Even after selling a million, Wayne is still releasing good music for free. Yesterday, he dropped the A Milli remix which celebrates his million sold which you can download for free here: http://www.zshare.net/download/13830079fdc8cb1c/
