Game, Set, Match, Classic

I don't follow tennis the way I follow Baseball, Hockey, Football, and Basketball. However, I put Tennis in a class with other sports like Soccer where I can appreciate a great match and we had one of the all time greats today at Wimbledon Center Court. Nadal finally beat Federer in a hard court final after coming so close last year. Today's win reminded me of the Sox beating The Yankees in 04 and as much as I hate to admit it when the Colts finally beat the Pats on the road to the Super Bowl. When your someone like Nadal who has played the second fiddle for so long, the only satisfactory way to over come the hump is to beat the best at their best. Nadal did that today in the greatest tennis match I have ever seen. Nadal had numerous chances to put it away in the third and fourth set, but each time it seemed Federer would make a huge shot or an ace to stay alive in the match and avoid being broken. After hours of great tennis, and a couple of rain delays, Nadal broke Federer and put it away. Today's match was everything great about sports. On a side note, it is also the reason I don't think the alleged sport of golf can ever match the other sports. In golf, while there can be 1-1 match up down the stretch, essentially what both players are seeing is who can play the course better. While there is some strategy depending on how well your opponent is doing, there is never that moment like in tennis, football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer where you have to physically overcome your opponent in some way; such as a pitcher striking out a batter, a basketball player driving past a defender to the bucket, or in tennis hitting a winning shot past your opponent.
