Movie Review: The Wackness (+ side note: 94 Hip Hop is Best American Music Ever)
Earlier tonight I saw The Wackness which could best be described as an odd buddy comedy between pot dealing 18 year old Luke (played by Josh Peck) and 40 or 50 something year old Shrink Dr. Squires who is an aging hippie. (Luke is Dr. Squires dealer and pays for Phyc. Sessions with pot) It is similar to many other types of movies including Wonder Boys, but the twist is that it is takes place in 1994 and that is what sets it apart. The writing, acting, and directing are all slightly above average and don't reach the levels of the aforementioned great Wonder Boys, but it is the movie's soundtrack which keeps it entertaining throughout. The songs come mostly from Nas's Illmatic, Biggie's Ready To Die, various songs from the Wu Tang Camp, and even some 94 era classic Bad Boy RNB. ( "I Remember" by Faith Evens and "Can't You See" by Total) There are also a few songs from the 60s played throughout. My First thought at the end of the movie was how amazing those mid-90s rap classic still sound especially on good movie theater speakers and my general conclusion that the best music scene in United States history was New York Hip Hop Circa 1993-1997. Method Man himself has a small part in the movie as a drug supplier with some sort of foreign accent (possibly Jamaican). In the first scene where we meet Method Man's character named Percy, we hear the Biggie song "The What" in the background. As Method Man's Percy character talks about how this is the new great stuff, we hear Method Man's verse from his featured performance on the Biggie song bumping from the speakers. It is one of the many nods to 94 throughout the entire movie. Sometimes they try too hard with the 94 references, but overall it works and there are plenty of funny scenes. The other main character in the movie is Luke's Crush Kristen played by Olivia Thirlby (a.k.a. Juno's best friend in Juno). She plays her role well as does one of the Olsen Twins ( I am pretty sure it is Mary Kate) who has a small role as a earthy pot smoking chick. Overall Grade: B
