Watching The Inauguration With My Class Of Pre-K Kids

Today, I watched the Inauguration Of President Barack Hussein Obama along side my pre-k class of 4/5 year olds. (for the record, when I was an intern in 04 in a Kindergarten Class I got them to watch Bush’s Inauguration) We watched it on the computer switching to the NECN feed after CNN kept crashing. During the inauguration, they asked many questions and made many comments ranging from why Obama is talking into two microphones at once to screaming that’s Malia and Shasha. Most of the children watched through Obama’s entire speech but a few got bored and I gave them the option to go to a different part of the classroom to look at books or color which they took. Whenever, Obama would pause, and the camera would pan to a cheering crowd the kids would also cheer. While they obviously could not comprehend everything going on at the event, most of the children watched with rapt attention. This is most likely due to the combination of factors of hearing about Obama and the inauguration from their parents and myself and the sheer fact that they where allowed to watch T.V. at school which is always something that most children think is an amazing event unto itself. Later, we did a roll play activity where I played the Chief Justice and all the children got to come up one at a time and recite the Oath of Office and become Present. They then got to make a speech about what they would do as president; the initiatives their championed as president varied from saying they would play computer games all day to saying they would live in the big white house.

As for my thoughts on the speech itself, it was typical good Obama; nothing too extraordinary though. My favorite line just in terms of pure imagery was “we will extend a hand, if you are willing to unclench your fists.”

Now let the real fun begin.
