Restaurant Review: Shabu Zen

Last night I went to Shabu Zen  a restaurant on 16 Tyler Street in Boston with a friend. At most restaurants you order something and they cook it for you. Not at Shabu Zen; there the tables are equipped with hot plates in the middle so you can cook your own soap. First you pick your broth ( I went with Spicy Szechuan) Next you pick the meats, noodles or rice,  and vegetables you want (lamb and scallops and Japanese noodles) and a couple of minutes later they bring them to you raw and you throw them in the soup. They also give you various things like garlic to put in the soup to make it more to your likening. After a couple of minutes of watching your stuff cook, you fish it out (it took me a couple of minutes to find one of my scallops) and begin to eat. Overall the food is good but not great and their is always a little anxiety if you are cooking it long enough despite the recommended cooking times on the menu. The experience though is very interesting and a good conversation starter if you are on a date or eating with someone who is adventurous. Hell, my friend even had some Ostrich in her soap that I tried which was pretty good. The service was quick and our waitress was very polite and frequently checked on us. The food is not too expensive a little over 20 bucks per person is what I would guess the average was. Overall Grade: B+
