How Barack Obama Got Me Into Harvard
No Barack did not read one of my blog posts and decide to write a personal recommendation for me. It all started last year around this time. I like both Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton and was not sure who to vote for in the primary. I ended up backing Obama because he spoke out against the Iraq war before hand and one other reason. The second and even more important reason was that he did not wait his turn. Everyone knew as far back as 2000 that Hillary Clinton wanted to be president. However, she did not run in 2004. This is most likely due to the fact she wanted to get a full senate term under her belt. Obama took a different tact; he said fuck it. A couple of years in the Senate may not usually be seen as qualifications to be president, but he was going to go for it anyway because he knew he could accomplish more good as president. ( I am sure there was some egotism involved as well)
Getting back to my situation, I have an associate degree from Bay State College and Bachelor Degree (in a few months) from UMass Boston. I am proud of my time at both schools, but I admit just like a 2 years in the senate is not normal qualifications for president those schools may not be considered the normal stepping stones to Harvard. But, Obama inspired me to shoot for the top. Much like Obama had to prove himself on the campaign trail, I knew I had to prove that my GPA’s at those schools where legit. So I studied my ass off for the GRE’s, tried to secure the best recommendations possible, and did everything else to bolster my application. On Friday, I found out I was accepted to the Harvard Graduate School Of Education.
I am not delusional. I know that accomplishment is not on par with Obama going from an unknown to the first Black President in 5 years. Hell, getting into the Grad School of Education is not even as hard as other grad schools like Law. Furthermore, getting in is no guarantee that I will graduate and even graduating is no guarantee that I will accomplish anything of substance in my life. Like Obama, and pretty much every other person on the planet, I will continue to have to constantly prove myself. Obama’s presidential run and eventually victory was the catalyst that inspired me to try to get into Harvard. Now that I got in, it is up to me to see what I can do from here.
