Where Does Johan Santana Rank?
Last night, the Red Sox lost to one of the all-time great pitchers Johan Santana. While watching the game, I was pondering (FN1) where Santana ranked in terms of pitchers of my life time. Going by his "stuff" and stats, I was considering putting him at the top; but so far, there are two things he is lacking. One is the World Series title which he might eventually get. (FN2) The other is his dynamic personality or lack there off. The 4 guys I think I would put ahead of him in terms of pitchers in my lifetime are Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, and Roger Clemens(FN3). When 3 of those 4 guys where on the mound there was an intensity that pulsated from them that got transfered to everyone in the ballpark or even watching on T.V. As great as Santana is, I just don't get that when he is on the mound. (Maddux was just really good for a really long time) Santana seems too sane. His stuff and life time stats might equal or best any of those 4 guys, but I don't see him going down as an iconic figure. When Pedro, Roger, or Randy where on the mound, you got a sense that anything could happen and pretty much everything did. (20 strike outs, no hitters, someone getting beaned in the head, a bat being thrown at a batter, ejections from the game, Don Zimmer being tossed to the ground, A complete meltdown while wearing Ninja Turtle shoe laces (FN4), or a Dove being killed in midair are just some of the examples.) Honestly, I am just kind of rambling now, but my general point is that Santana is great, but he will never be an iconic all-time pitcher like those other guys unless he keeps it up for almost as long as Maddux because he is not as interesting to watch on the mound as Pedro, Roger, or Randy Johnson; so without further ado, here are my top 10 pitchers of my life time.
1. Pedro Martinez
2. Greg Maddux
3. Randy Johnson
4. Roger Clemens
5, Johan Santana.
6. Dwight Gooden
7. Curt Schilling
8. Tom Glavine
9. Dennis Eckersley (FN5)
10. Mariano Rivera (FN6)
(FN1.) Pinky and The Brain Style
(FN2) Hopefully not as a fucking Met
(FN3) For the sake of the article, I am ignoring all steroid stuff for Roger (hell Pedro, The Big Unit, and Santana most likely all did PED at one point as well so fuck it)
(FN4) I think people sometimes forget how strange Roger even was in the 80s.
(FN5) I am including him even though his best work as a starter was before I was born.
(FN6) I am biased against closers, but this guy has been so good for so long so he is more important pitcher than starters like Mussina, David Cone, Frank Viola, Orel Hershiser, Jack Mcdowell, Roy Halladay, Jimmy Key,
