There is little hope of an actual new album from The Wu Tang Clan or Outkast, so by slight default The Clipse are the best hip hop group going right now. In addition, there has been a dearth of decent rap in 09 so a new Clipse album is Kinda Like A Big Deal. (see what I did there, thats the name of the single, I can even do corny puns in posts about hip hop) First off, I love the beat to the song. It has an old school feel at some points but not like a trying too hard to sound old school vibe like Common's Universal Mind Control had. Furthermore, the sound effects in the background really add a lot to the menacing of the atmosphere of the song. The song features Kanye as it should since the title is a reference to Kanye's verse on Ghostface Killah's Back Like That Remix referencing Anchorman. Kanye has some great lines in his verse this time like " Fire Marshall said I took it to the Max like TJ-Yea people I said Marshalls we play-I guess I'm like the Black Marshall meets Jay." That may be the best use of discount clothing stores in song lyrics ever. In a time when the weather sucks and the economy is still fucked up, we need old fashion boasting anthems like this to get our collective mojo back. Or as Pusha T says in the first verse " It's a blessin' to blow a hundred thou in a recession-With no second guessing"
