Ken Griffey Jr Makes Me Feel Old

I remember some stuff before I was 5, but vivid memories start after age 5. That is why Ken Griffey Jr. was the first ballplayer that I can remember entering the league being super hyped. Not only was he super hyped on the field so was his rookie baseball card for the new Upper Deck brand. His card was obviously number 1 in the set with the now iconic front picture. I remember going down to Boston Baseball Cards in Watertown Square where Taxman currently is to buy the card with my older brother and one of his friends. Later, I would look at the monthly Beckett Baseball Monthly  to find the value of the card with the hope that it would be my generation's Hornus Wagner and be worth enough to pay for my college. Well, I am about to enter Grad School and I still have that Griffey card. Needless to say, I am not going to be paying Harvard next year with the card. Griffey ended up having an odd career. He was the best player in baseball during the 90s but injuries marred the second half of his career. His career numbers will look great, but still it seems like he did not fully have the career he should have. Getting back to his rookie card, there are way too many of them available for them to be worth a ton of money. Most are being bought or sold for around 30 bucks and one in completely perfect condition might fetch you a few hundred. For me, the symbolic worth of a period in my life of the card is much more than that and as I watched Griffey back on Seattle this weekend at Fenway  he looked a little old and it reminded me that so am I.
