Jay Z Can't Stop Tabi Bonney and Tight Jeans Rap
Much was made of Jay Z's song Death Of Autotune in regards to it going at the use of autotune; however, not enough people mentioned that Jay Z took shots at the "tight jeans rap" movement with lines like "your boys jeans too tight, your colors too bright, your voice too light." This is interesting because it is a side attack at "tight jeans rap" which never really uses auto tune. I don't think Jay Z's battle for the direction of hip hop is a winnable fight. Case in point the new song "Jet Setter" by Tabi Bonney. While "Jet Setter" obviously is influenced by both Pharrell Williams production style and old 80s style hip hop, right now in the summer of 2009 the song sounds fresh. Jay Z is one of the greatest rappers of all time and even in at damn near 40 he is 10 times the rapper most of these younger rappers such as the The Cool Kids, The Pack, New Boyz (who actually have a song about their bright colored clothes that Jay Z might have been referencing in his line) , and the aforementioned Tabi Bonney. That being said, Jay Z's sound right now is tired and even with his better lyrics and flow if you put a gun to my head and said either listen to Jay Z's DOA or Run This Town or Tabi Bonney, I would have to go with the latter.
