Madden 10 Review: A-

I have owned Madden 10 for the PS3 for about 2 weeks now so I think I have a pretty good feel for the game. The first thing anyone will notice when playing is the great graphics. While there are some glitchy player movements here and there, everything looks very realistic and the game does a great job making every specific player look like their real life counterpart. Not only do the players look like they do in real life, they also play like they do in real life. Most of the time while playing the game I have been the Patriots and you can really see the detail they put into each players style when playing with Moss and Welker. Throw a pass to Moss, and he will out jump the cornerback to get it. Make Welker run a quick slant route and he will do a better job than pretty much anyone else in the game at getting himself quickly open and in a good position to get yack after the catch. This leads us to talking about the strongest aspect of the game which is the quarterback play. The game really forces you to make your progression from looking for your primary target, to your secondary targets if he is covered, all the while keeping an eye to make sure there is not someone about to sack you. Defense, is a little less involved in termed of the game play and is all about picking the right play. Sometimes when playing the computer on all-pro level or hall of fame level, it is hard to play defense and now and then the computer pulls off a play that is kind of bullshit. Playing the computer even in the in depth franchise mode gets boring kind of quick and thus the vast majority of the fun will be had playing friends and random people online. Here, the game becomes like a chess match. If you know who you are playing, you might have a feel for their personality and style and tailor your defense towards that. If you are playing a random person, over the course of the game, you usually can get a pretty good feel of the other person's personalty, what plays they like to run, and how many risks they are willing to take. Thus, the game becomes a battle of trying to guess what the other person is going to do. For example, I was recently playing a guy the day after Vick came back who was using Vick by scrambling left a lot. So I guessed correctly the next time he would do that and did a corner blitz from that side and nailed him just as he was starting to scramble. Other times it is good to know the actual weaknesses of real life team such as The Colts who I have had success running up the middle against which is something I have sucked at against every other team. Part of the enjoyment of the game is the fact the Pats are both really good and have plenty of rivals. While it is meaningless in the grand scheme of things, it is hard not to feel like you are playing for your teams reputation when facing someone playing as The Colts, The Jets, The Steelers, or Giants. Hell, to quote Bill Belichick, "there are no meaningless games when you are playing in them."
