Seizing Up Potential Celebrity Senatorial Candidates
Most of the talk so far has been about Joe and Vicki Kennedy, Martha Coakley, and Stephen Lynch, but I am going to look at possible celebrities who might come out of left field and run for the MA Senate seat.
1. Theo Epstein: He has the Brookline roots and the educational qualifications. (Yale Undergrad and University of San Diego School Of Law) In addition, he has experience dealing with the media and handling press conferences. While he has never held political office or done anything too overtly political, he now and then lets his liberal political bent be known. He obviously has huge name recognition in the area and his image is squeaky clean so if he ever decided to step down as GM and make a run for the Senate he would be an immediate force to contend with.
2. Matt Damon: He grew up in Cambridge and went to Harvard, but did not finish getting his degree there. He has been politically outspoken in the past taking shots at Sarah Palin and opposing the Iraq war so his political views jive with many Massachusetts Democrats. Like Epstein, he has never really been involved in anything too scandalous that could hurt his chances. On the down side, he has not lived here for a while and seems more into trying to win an Oscar than anything else.
3. Ben Affleck: You can’t mention one without the other. He has a similar pedigree as Damon (from Cambridge went to good College where he did not finish {Occidental }) , but I think Affleck would be more likely to run and has a better politicians public personality than Damon. His political views are liberal and he has been on with Bill O’Reilly and Chris Mathews before talking politics and handled himself well. Despite having some past personal issues such as drunk driving, he seems to have settled down into married life so that won’t hurt him that much. He has also done charity work that would look raising money from everything to the family of soldiers and various children’s charities.
4. Kay Hanley: The former Letters To Cleo front women, (she has a solo show at TT. The Bears September 3rd) does not have the name recognition as some of the others here, but has the Dorchester Roots and is not afraid to speak her political mind. She frequently blogs about politics and recently wrote for the Huffingtonpost on health care. In addition, she has even made political music such as her work on the song “God Save The Internet” in support of net neutrality. Other Songs about getting high and such might scare off some voters, but this is Massachusetts after all so maybe not.
5. Tom Brady: He is about to start his comeback season so the chances of him stopping football and running for office is not likely; however, he may be sick of have giant 350 pound linebackers falling on him so who knows. He obviously has huge name recognition, tons of public good will, good looks, and experience with the media. While he has rarely been overtly political, he has shone that he likes being in the spotlight and enjoys the challenge of competition which being in politics would provide.
6. Curt Schilling: Politicians have to love to talk and give their views and we all know that Schilling can not shut up to save his life. If he decided to run, I think he would he would immediately become the number 1 Republican contender and he seems to be moderate enough in his views that he would have a shot in the general especially with all the good will he has stored up from The Bloody Sock 04 World Series Run and all the charity work he does.
7. Eliza Dushku: The Watertown home girl seems to have an interest in politics, but would not be old enough to make a go for it this time around she would have to wait till next go round.
(Just an FYI, I know some of these people do not currently live here, but as I understand it, you do not need to have lived in MA for a certain amount of time to run for the Senate here)
