He essentially won the series with his at bat last night. He fouled off a half dozen pitches and then eventually went the opposite way for a single. It is the kind of at bat that he has had a hundred times before in his career. It is also the kind of at bat that JD Drew simply can not do. While there is not a huge difference in their stats, the difference in how hard it is to get them out when comparing Drew and Damon is enormous and that difference is a large portion of why the Yankees are 1 game away from winning it all and the Sox went home. Oh yeah, Damon also stole second and third on the same play because Philly was asleep which further turned Lidge into a basketcase.
