Theory: Facebook Is Helping T.V. Ratings

One might intuitively think that something like Facebook would hurt T.V. ratings because it would take people away from the T.V. and have them on the computer; I believe that FB might actually be helping T.V. ratings especially for major events and shows with cult followings. This past year, things like The Grammy’s, NFL Playoffs/Super Bowl, World Series, the MTV Awards, and many other events all did better in the ratings than in the past few years. Part of the reason (there are many other reasons) for this might be that since FB has broadened its reach to a much older demographic, people watch these shows and events at a higher rate to participate in the instant water cooler type discussions that occur on FB about major events; this may also be true for cult shows like Lost or Jersey Shore. I predict that this years Oscars will continue the trend and post one of the biggest ratings in years partly because of FB, but mostly because of Avatar.
