Education Reporting In General Sucks

Case in point, this recent Boston.com article: http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2010/07/mass_gets_587_m.html The article talks about a federal grant from the Department of Education that Mass Schools will compete for by creating a proposal that adopts frameworks of one of the school overhaul plans of the Obama Administration. What the article does not do, is list the possible plans the school can adopt or provide a link to where people can find it. The 4 plans can be found here on page 16: http://www2.ed.gov/policy/elsec/leg/blueprint/blueprint.pdf

▶Transformation model: Replace the principal, strengthen staffing, implement a research-based instructional program, provide extended learning time, and implement new governance and flexibility.
▶▶Turnaround model: Replace the principal and rehire no more than 50 percent of the school staff, implement a research-based instructional program, provide extended learning time, and implement new governance structure.
▶▶Restart model: Convert or close and reopen the school under the management of an effective charter operator, charter management organization, or education management organization.
▶▶School closure model: Close the school and enroll students who attended it in other, higher-performing schools in the district.

On a side note, I also think that educators and researchers need to improve their public relation, marketing skills and their political savvy. I would like to see classes at HGSE and other Ed schools that help educators and researchers promote researched best practices in education in a way that better informs the media, voting public, and lawmakers. Part of that will require being able to come up with catchy slogans and themes that distill complex research and policy proposals. One of the reasons No Child Left Behind passed was because of its catchy Orwellian title.
