Technology Helping In Education: This Time In India (we need more of this kind of stuff here)

This is a cool story about how Karaoke lyrics and shows with subtitles are helping people learn to read in remote villages in India. I have seen similar effects in my classroom when kids use computer games like Dora that tell stories while highlighting each individual word as it is being read and provide games with phonics instruction; when I researched these type of games/shows last year, they did not prove to be a replacement for traditional reading instruction, but a good supplement. That being said, I think a benefit of using computers/television in education is that in some cases children who have a hard time learning also have behavioral problems in class that eventually causes an antagonistic relationship with the teacher. This sometimes ends up with the child ignoring the "messenger" of the instruction. (i.e. the teacher they do not like) Computer and Television games are messenger neutral though and the child might be more likely to listen to it. I would love to see in the future, instead of buying new text books if schools invested in ipads or similiar devices for each student that had the books they needed for class preloaded into the device as well as universal designed for learning universal designed for learning applications put in device that scaffolded the child's learning.
