One of my life goals, is to start " The Center For Research Of Useless Information" where I can research stuff like the percentage of exclamation points used by various demographics and in various context and over the course of time. Like For example, I think it would be interesting to know if people use more or less exclamation points in FB/Text/Email messages in 2007 (or any point int time) or today. Furthermore, I would want to continue to watch the trend over the next decade to see if their is a continual rise in exclamation point usage or if it plateaus at some point. I would also then want to look into the percent of exclamation points used in more formal text and chart that on a graph as well. I would be willing to bet that currently we are at an apex in terms of use of exclamation points in general (with women in that demographic being the highest) If I am correct in my hypothesis that people currently use exclamation points in at a highest percentage in the history of humanity, I think it would have interesting cultural implications. Would it mean that we are shouting more? Would it mean we that people have a greater need to be heard and feel that exclamation garner more attention to their message? Are people trying to make the person they are writing to feel more important or more wanted by writing exclamation points after mundane statements like "Hey!!!! How Are You?!!!" The only way to find all of that out would be after looking at the quantitative data of explanation point usage over time would be to get some qualitative data and interview people regarding what they are trying to convey when they use an exclamation point during an informal message via text/email/FB.
